Quarter: Winter 2023
Grade: A+

Professoressa Marianna is super funny and attentive to her students. She responds to emails within minutes.S he constantly checks in and asks if we need help and encourage us to meet with her to go over things.

Her lectures are super engaging and the slides are easy to follow. She makes jokes and tells us to have fun while learning Italian!

The class is held asynchronously so if you cannot attend the live sessions you can watch the recordings and complete assignments. Some of the questions are indeed specific (I think she wants to make sure we actually sit through the recordings as if we were in class) but nothing too crazy. That's how I learned some Italian slang actually!

She has a cute dog that she often mentions (I love dogs too!).

I never had a professor who cared about her students' mental health as much as her. She allows you to focus on healing if you are going through a rough patch in life. I was very grateful for that.

I am in love with Italian thanks to her. Take her class!!!!

PS: not sure who wrote the really bad review haha, Probably someone who cheated or someone who mistook her for someone else *they got an A+ and they are complaining?* LOL.

In reference to the bad review I want to say that I completely DISAGREE!

Taking Italian 1 with Professor Nespoli was amazing! She was incredibly engaging and patient not to mention that she ALWAYS made herself available even outside of office hours. While I was dealing with a lot of personal external factors "new baby", Professor Nespoli made sure that my experience in this class was a positive one not to mention that she encouraged me and helped to move forward no matter what.

- She does offer extra credit.
- Though this class is asynchronous, make sure to show up to her virtual lessons and participate. She will not ding you for any mistakes you make .... she simply wants effort and participation. =)

I cannot say enough good things about Professoressa Nespoli! She is such a caring instructor who is so invested in her students' success. Going into this class with little to no knowledge of the Italian language, I can definitely say I feel more confident with the basics of Italian because of how supportive and encouraging this professor is.

In terms of class organization, I took the course asynchronously so you have to either watch recordings of the lectures twice a week or attend the live sessions she holds. There's no penalty for not attending, it's just whatever works best for your schedule. You do have to complete a participation assignment if you don't attend the live session, but all answers are easily found in the recording. It's definitely useful to get the live practice, but as long as you're on top of your studying you should be fine. All assignments, quizzes, and class materials are organized clearly on BruinLearn which I really appreciate.

Your grade is made up of writing compositions, quizzes, homework, participation and a final exam. She grades assignments fairly, there are no surprises on the quizzes and I would say they're a pretty accurate reflection of what you've learned.

As an instructor, Professoressa Nespoli is super kind and patient with every student's learning process. As a senior, I can say she is one of the most understanding and accommodating professors I've had at UCLA. Overall, I highly recommend taking Italian 1 with Professoressa Nespoli!!

I would change everything about this class. Firstly, if you miss a zoom lecture, you have to watch the entire recording she posts on canvas and answer extremely specific questions to gain participation points. Sometimes she is absent, happened multiple times throughout the quarter and was a pain to watch the recordings. Sometimes I question whether or not she is actually a teacher? Blatantly cusses during class and has no regard for whether or not a student is struggling. Half of the class dropped it after the first week and I was determined enough to finish the class, she destroyed my desire to learn Italian and my perception of the language department here at UCLA.
