Quarter: Spring 2018

The class material really isn't that hard. Professor Ankowski is a clear and helpful professor and attending lectures helps clarify concepts. However, your grade in this class depends almost entirely on your TA. I had an A+ on both the exams but my TA, Akila Kadambi brought down my grade a lot. DO. NOT. TAKE. HER. She often contradicted herself and graded people based on who she liked instead of on the quality of their work. She was also very unorganized and we often went over the 2 hour lab time. I had another class right after and used to get delayed because of her. Overall, the class is actually really great and I learned a lot. Be careful of your TA though, they can make or break your grade in this class!

This is the second class I've taken with Ankowski and honestly I loved having her as a professor. She is really engaging and really knowledgeable about the subject.

I was honestly dreading taking this class because I have heard horror stories about it, but honestly it was not that bad. As long as you stay on top of your stuff and go to your TAs office hours you shouldn't have a problem. Keep up with the reading bc Ankowski asks 1-2 questions from the textbook (that were not touched upon in the lecture) on her tests. My biggest piece of advice would be to pay attention in lecture and read the textbook within that same lecture week and pay attention to the areas that correlate with the lecture in the textbook. Although the tests are non-cumalative, the material builds upon each other and so you can't forget what you learned in the first half of the class, otherwise you will really struggle with the second half.

The tests are worth 60% of your grade so make sure you are paying attention in lecture because lectures are not podcasted or recorded. The tests are all application of scenario and have the same format as practice exams so make sure you really give those your best effort.

Lab was the hardest part of this class. The group project is kind of difficult, but completely doable. Write all the submissions at least a week before they are do so you have time to go to your TAs office hours and ask for advice. Each TA is different so I would suggest sticking with what your TA tells you. It is not that the content is difficult, because it is not, it is the grading. APA sucks and I can honestly say that after this class I have become better at writing in APA. As long as you score above the mean you should be fine.

Start early , keep up with the content, and always go to lecture.

Hope this helps :)

Professor Ankowski was cool. I feel like she touched on all the subjects needed for the test. I thought the class would have been more difficult actually, but I was pretty surprised by my grade. I felt like I was doing well, but initially, my scores weren't reflecting that. I'm gonna let you guys know that as long as your within 1 standard deviation above or below the mean, you gucci. I was stressing about this class because of how hard people make it seem, but I honestly felt that it was very doable during the quarter. Just learn those concepts! That's how you do well but only answer within the confines of the question being asked. Be very confident in your answer choices! If there's any way you can do the AAP plf, do it and ace these quizzes and exams. Melissa is an OG, fr. Also, make sure your papers are APA certified, these are easy points to miss. Go to your T.A. and ask for help if you need it or are unsure because those points will be taken away if you don't do it how they want it. Every T.A. is different. I'm gonna post my stats just to give you some courage:
Quizzes: 14/15
Methods: 67/100
Proposal: 60-65/100, it was really below my section's mean btw
First Sub: 65/100
Final sub: 90/100
First Midterm: 31/40
Final Midterm: 36/100
Extra Credit: 1/1
Just know that it all depends on your class lecture's average, which was about a C+ for my class. My section's average was about a D+/C-. The lecture tests are worth 60% whereas the lab is worth 40%. Now good luck!

Let me just start off by saying that regardless of who teaches this class the difficulty is the same because the class material, assignments and test content never change. Yes, the tests are tricky but that’s how they’ve been designed for years and you can’t put the blame on the professor. The only thing that is different about this particular class with Ankowski is obviously how well lectures were given. Professor Ankowski is a great professor who is extremely engaging and passionate about the subject. The only thing is that she does not use PowerPoints and the lectures aren’t podcasted so you really can’t skip. Also your TA pretty much determines your grade in lab so reach out to them if you need help and just pray you get one that is willing to be there for you.

Overall, I do not regret taking this class with Ankowski I thought she was great. This class is tough though so mentally prepare yourself for a heavy workload and try your best from the start. Also, pray that you get a good group for the project because you will be working with them for pretty much the entire quarter.

Doing well in this class is possible, but requires a huge amount of time and effort; the class is 6 units for a reason. I lucked out with a decent TA, but honestly the key to doing well in this class is to study your ASS OFF for those exams. Lecture is weighed more in your overall grade than lab, so try to dedicate more energy to it.
Bad news: you have to read the textbook to do well on the exams. Ankowski will have about 3-4 questions on the exam straight from the textbook. Honestly, I didn't read the textbook throughout the quarter but dedicated one day studying before each exam to reading all of the chapters the test would cover. I took those notes, re-did lecture notes, and went to office hours with any questions I had. Good luck!

I would like to preface this review by stating that Professor Ankowski is a great lecturer and I would recommend taking her class if you need to take Psych 100B. This review is strictly about the course's content which she has no control over.

I have never rated a class before, but this class warrants it. Despite being warned of the rigor and harshness of Psych 100B, I wholeheartedly believed that I could make it through this course intact- I was wrong. I am generally an A student with occasional B+'s, but after this class, I genuinely have no idea what I am. This class is a test of emotional stability and endurance. In essence, it is an enormous mind game (especially the tests). The group project was taxing- they attempted to pair the groups equally (emphasis on the attempt), but some groups were far more equal than others.

Tip: Prepare yourself mentally to receive low grades, and make sure your low grades are at or above the class and lab mean. If you're above the mean, you will be curved up.

So, I really enjoyed Dr. Ankowski's lectures. She's very clear and articulate and she kept the course interesting. She's a fan of the early mornings, which is not very convenient for most, but if you enjoy early classes, go for it. Personally, I commute a very long way and I wasn't able to make it to her morning lectures and had to listen to them via recordings, which honestly made it difficult to keep up sometimes. She uses no slides and she doesnt podcast. She writes on the chalkboard a lot, so if you're not in class, be prepared for a set back. The exam questions are SUPER tricky and there's not much time given to do them. I'v been getting As on exams for 5 years, with a couple of Bs here and there, and I got a 70% on the midterm for this class. So, you really need to have emotional stability when taking this course, because it is designed to make you critically think which is great, but it's also designed to emotionally wreck you, which is terrible. Also, KEEP YOUR LOAD LIGHT. I had to take several other heavy classes along with this which was a terrible idea and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. This is a very heavy class!!!!
