All Ratings and Reviews for Amy N Cohen
I thought that Prof Cohen really exemplified what's wrong with psych. She had no class consciousness (think SES, not classroom), perhaps unsurprising since she is setting up a private practice in Beverly Hills. At one point she mentioned that her husband had encouraged her to reuse the textbook from a previous quarter to save students money, and she then said "I never think of these things!" No kidding. Also, this fieldwork class had lame and repetitive speakers (did we really need two back-to-back "teens-at-risk" speakers in lieu of someone coming in to talk about othe issues like substance abuse or sexual assault and domestic violence?) Overall, the fieldwork seminar was pretty lame. We only had one really good, well-organized speaker, and the level of class discussion horrified me (one woman thought we should lock up all schizophenic patients on the off chance that they might become violent one day). If you want experience, do an internship, but don't waste your time and money taking this seminar.
I took prof. Cohen for psych 127 during the summer (03). I can honestly say that she is a very very caring professor. She made me feel very welcomed when I visited during office hours and was always available to talk to students. Her lectures were interesting and full information, sometimes it seemed like she was overloading us with statistics, but fortunately she didn't make us memorize them. Otherwise, I highly highly recommend taking Cohen for 127, she is definitely one of the best Professors here at UCLA.
I had Dr. Cohen for a small seminar class. She is very approachable and enthusiastic about teaching. Our class had no exams so I can't comment on that, but her pesonality is great...someone who no doubt would be interesting in a lecture course.
