All Ratings and Reviews for Andrea Ghez
Professor Ghez was a spectacular teacher. She was a kind, helpful, and understanding professor. She did assign a lot of homework sometimes, and we did have reading quizzes before every lecture, but they were usually pretty fair and doable. She always made sure to remind us that her office hours were open, and she also set up weekly homework sessions so the entire class could help each other with homework
Seems like there's been some time since anyone's left a Prof. Ghez eval. Perhaps she's changed since the last one, because she is an absolutely amazing teacher.
She has the enthusiasm and concern for her students that 90% of the professors here seem to have left back in grad school. She may be ever-so-slightly frazzled at times, but it just plays into the loopy astronomer persona and doesn't detract at all from the lectures (which any observant student can tell she puts a lot of time into creating).
Besides, it's just pretty awesome to be taught by someone as famous as Prof. Ghez in a relatively small class.
Ghez is a good lecturer, but it's possible to pass the class without going to lecture. I missed most of them and managed to get an A-. I went to my TA office hours and just read the book on my own time.
took the class thinking that it would be an easy GE... material was interesting but lectures were not mandatory to go to. a lot of the stuff she says is straight from the textbook. however, her midterms are harder than you think so dont take it lightly... plus, there's weekly hw which u have to do online which was pretty hard... u actually learn a lot but dont take this class if u are expecting an easy A~
Ghez was very approachable. If you need to take Astro 3 as a GE or just because your interested, definitely take it from her. If you have sepcific questions, she's very willing to answer then outside of class. Additionally, she doesn't give hours of homework and prepares you very well for her tests. The only problem is that she's often in Hawaii doing research (about 3 times per quarter).
jeez, if you are looking for an easy class, don't take astr 3 w/ her. She's not a good lecturer. She's too busy w/ her own research and her test questions are often vague and confusing to understand. The concepts and material can be learned quite easily, but her vague test questions make the whole course kinda difficult, yet not. Most of the questions that you will miss on her hw and exams are due to your misunderstanding of the question.
Had 2 classes with Ghez...Physics 2AH and Astro 82. She is a great teacher and I learned a lot in those classes. She explains everything simply and thoroughly with lots of visual aids and examples. Grades are on an absolute scale, so competition with other students isn't a problem. Although her tests are on the difficult side, she rewards for improvement and is fair on grading.
Class was fast paced, but she worked hard to make sure people understood. Very clearly enjoys the subject, which gets passed along to the student. A good professor.
I took physics 8a way back in 96 with professor Ghez and she was awesome. She had a huge passion for teaching, and really cares whether you learn or not. At office hours, she was very helpful, but not in the way of giving you answers, but in the way of guiding you on how to figure it out. She's probably one of the best professor's I've had here at ucla.
I took Astro 3 with Prof Ghez and I thought she was good. If you go to her lectures, you can really follow along, esp if you've read the material before. She explains pretty well, and she seems like she likes what she's talking about which is pretty important. I hate math and science but I found the material interesting and not too hard. Her tests aren't too bad either. Just study for the final.
