Charwat expects a lot out of his students on reports, unlike most science/engineering profs who don't mind if your writing is sloppy. He also gives quizzes which have almost nothing to do with the lab work. Still, his class isn't bad. The lectures don't matter so much because it's all material you've learned before, and what you need is usually in your lab manual (and besides, 2/3rds of the lectures are given by the TAs). I've heard that some of the other profs for MAE 157 don't require as much work, but nobody in my section got a grade below B- so the grading is pretty generous.

Wants the student to apply what he/she has learned in class to different situations in the real world. This is why his quizes for 157 are so damn hard. He's generally hard to find on campus short of lab hours. He does give you his home phone number though. Do good on the quizes and keep asking can get on his good side that way.
