Professor Beiderwell is a cool guy... I liked the way he approached the class....Although I don't find a reason for this writing class, he was a good professor... I don't know why we have to take an english class like this...I doubt my writing improved greatly by writing 3 essays and revising one...The fact that my grades on each one improved as the quarter went by just shows that I learned the way he liked us to write. As long as you write the way they like it....u'll get an A...But anyways, prof. Beiderwell is a good guy..he always has office hours and he cares about u...he wants u to do good in the class...

Beiderwell is a nice man. However, he grades based on his own opinion. He thinks this helps students to write for particular audiences. If you take a class with him, go to meetings with him and just listen to what he suggests. He is not really suggesting, he is telling you. GOOD LUCK!!

great guy. workload wise, its an easy class. kinda boring but u'll survive. i think he grades rough drafts easy and he grades the final paper harder bc he expects u to improve it. i was shocked that my final grade was worse than i expected. so dont assume hes THAT easy. but he is somewhat easy. very nice guy. he is very VERY helpful in office hours. go to them before u turn ur final paper in. he def. helps give u direction and clears up any confusion that u might still have.

At first, I thought that this prof was very unfair, biased, and difficult when it came to grading. This was right after I had received my first paper back from him, and I got a B-. I thought that I did really well on this paper too, and that I should have gotten a higher grade. I was very upset and wanted to give up already since there were only three papers in this class.

But then the professor reminded us that this paper could be regraded, and that he would be more than willing to help us improve that paper if we wanted to. I decided to give this professor a chance, and I started to come into his office hours more often, participate more in class dicussions, and actually listen to his writing advice. My writing immediately showed improvement, as I had received an A on my second paper. I ended up with a solid A in the class after making many thoughtful revisions on my papers and doing several office hour visits.

I realized that after taking this class, that I had learned SOOO much with Professor Beiderwell. I never expected to learn all that I had learned in this basic English 3 class. Prof really does care about his students and really wants them to learn. He is very caring, considerate, and overall very effective. Go to his office hours. Really take the time and effort to listen to his advice and also revise, revise, revise! I have never before written a recommendation for any professor at UCLA, but after taking him, and realizing how he significantly helped me improve my writing skills, I couldn't help resist recommending him to anyone out there that is looking for an outstanding English professor.

ENGCOMP A Submitted Nov. 21, 2008 Grade Received: N/A

Very Comfortable class, Only 3 essays
However, because it is only a prerequisite, not many students normally show up.
English Comp A is technically 4 units which don't actually count.
Also the grade you receive at the end of the quarter does not count in your gpa.

Beiderwell is very understanding and concerned about both stances of an argument while incorporating "they say/I say" into essays. He also uses many articles from news and tabloids in order to expand essay topics and his students ideas.
Professor Beiderwell is a very laid back and confident choice for Eng Comp A.

ENGCOMP 100W Submitted June 20, 2005 Grade Received: N/A

Prof Beiderwell has a deep understanding for the complexity of the English langugage. For the 1st 5 weeks he had us read articles/excerpts to learn different writing styles. Then for the last 5 weeks we worked on our own 15 page essay on ANY TOPIC OF CHOICE (after discussing with him).

Our 100W class had students who wrote at a wide range of proficiencies. What is great about Beiderwell is that he is a useful professor for students of all writing calibers. He helps you structure your essay in the most clear and concise manner, and guides you to use succinct verbage.

Overall the best writing professor I've had ever. period.

ENGCOMP A Submitted Nov. 19, 2015 Grade Received: N/A

Honestly, one of my favorite professors! He's really caring and easy to talk to. I know for his class, going to 3 of his office hours impacts your grade, and those sessions really helped me get to know him AND he gives really great advice! (Like if you ask the right questions, he'll vaguely tell you how to set up your essay! It's really nice!)
Workload is pretty easy, just take your time with your essays. He's brilliant!
3 essays. Journal entries (any topic you want). A couple of readings - Some are boring, but he tries really hard to get the students intrigued.
