All Ratings and Reviews for Cheryl Ann Zimmer
I had Zimmer for the second half of LS1 and i liked her better than the first prof, Shipe. She simplified the material so it was understandable and her course reader was really clear and the diagrams in them help you remember the material. She keeps you interested and her powerpoints are easy to follow, colorful, and clear. If you attend lectures and take good notes/study the course reader, you'll have no problem.
Excruciatingly dull. Killed my interest in the topic. (EEB105)
dr. zimmer is an extremely enjoyable professor that adds a lot of humor into her lectures. the midterms and final were not that bad, you just had to memorize all the slides presented in class. it is unnecessary to read the ls book, so don't get it! it'll waste one hundred of your dollars. but take this class with zimmer teaching the latter half; i'm sure you'll find her very amusing.
Prof. Zimmer is sooooo awesome. She has the greatest jokes and she makes a really dull subject interesting. Her tests are not too difficult and her lectures basically prepares you really well for each exam. Take her if you can, she's the best!
zimmer is one of the best prof's at ucla; her enthusiasm actually made the invert bio class somewhat of a fun experience. it is true that the info can be a bit overwhelming for a single class, but i feel as if i've learned a hell of a lot more than i ever would have in a different class. if you have the chance of working with dr. z, take full advantage - you won't regret it.
Don\355t take this class just to fulfill the OBEE major lab requirement. Professor Zimmer expects A LOT of you, \354since this is an upper division course\356, something she reiterates constantly in class. Tons of material is covered, so if this is the only class you\355re taking for the quarter, I still wish you luck. A digital camera is a MUST for lab, because that\355s the only way to keep fresh in your mind all the organisms that were covered in lab. I would only take this class if your load for the quarter is VERY VERY light.
Prof. Zimmer was a great professor. She put a lot of time into her powerpoint presentations and they are really helpful. Everything you need to know is right there in the lectures. You don't have to read the book with Prof. Zimmer. Also, she really takes the time to talk slowly and allow you to get all the notes down, which was appreciated compared to Hespenheide who taught the first half of the class and often talked too fast. She was really understanding and really interested in student learning. When there was the anti war protest she even said she would understand if people walked out during her class and stopped lecturing to allow them to chant and told them to come by her office hours to get the notes they missed! She is a great teacher and I really recommend her.
zimmer is awesome; she really made a dry and boring "memorize this" type of class into an enjoyable experience. she really cares about her work, and encourages us to get more involved with biology; for example, she told us about the adopt-a-manatee program on the first day of lecture to get us interested in ecology and conservation. i miss my teachers from high school who were completely gung ho about learning and student involvement (and yes, also made bad jokes as zimmer does), and zimmer really brings back memories of them without compromising her intellectual standards.
Zimmer taught the second half of my LS1 course, and she was awesome. Her course reader notes are amazing. If you know the course reader, the exams will be fine.
OBEE 105 is a lot of work, PERIOD. Don\355t take this class to satisfy one of the lab requirements for the Biology major. It\355s not worth it (unless you find invertebrates fascinating or know a GREAT deal about them!). Professor Zimmer is a fair instructor. However, she constantly reminds you that you\355re in an UPPER DIV class and thus expects a lot from you. If you can\355t spend hours studying for this class, I really don\355t recommend it. Lab is six hours long + lab practicals that tests you on the numerous organisms you looked at during lab/lecture + lots of lecture material, all covered on either the lab practicals or midterm/final. And don\355t think the midterm/final will be easy: half the class practically failed the midterm. She has fill-in-the-blank questions that just make you go \354what???\356, an long essay question, short essay questions, and multiple choice Q\355s that you have to finish in an hour and a half.
