Linguistics is a particular taste. Some people love it, and some despise it. I am of the former category, with slightly less enthusiasm. No matter how good or bad Wilson is, if you are of the latter category, you will hate this class.

Wilson is a moderately good introductory professor. Undoubtedly, he knows what he is talking about, with special emphasis on a few areas of the field. He goes into those categories in more depth than the others. Wilson also will care and make sure you understand the material. He will explain things many times, extremely patiently. He is open to new ideas and does not shut people down very easily.

The exams are pretty straight-forward. As long as you have the lecture notes and understand them, you will be fine. The homeworks are leniently graded and are more for general understanding and remind me of elementary-school "participation points." This class is a GPA booster if you put a little effort into it. The class can feel long and boring at times because his voice is a bit monotone and the subject matter isn't always too edge-of-the-seat exciting.

I would take the class again, but then again, I like linguistics. Take this instead of 1; it's no harder.

Professor Wilson is not only a frighteningly knowledgeable professor but a truly decent human being. He cares about both his students as actual people and how well they understand the class material. His sense of humor and exhaustive research into the subject keeps class interesting.

Colin Wilson is the best teacher I've had at UCLA so far. He truly cares about every student and will selflessly help with any question asked. He's always there for office hours too! Fantastic class.

I am a Computer Science major who took this class to fulfill a G.E. class as well as possibly be a prereq to upper div ling classes for my technical minor. I only took this one class but not only was it easy, but it was really interesting as well. I took managment as my technical minor instead. I kind of regret it. Wilson is a great prof. He is fun, energetic, concise, and clear. This class was great. The hw's were pretty easy and could be aided by TA's or Wilson easily as well. The exams were kinda tough but studying enough will make things not nearly as bad. I liked this class a lot, learned a lot, and totally dug the prof. He is great.

He's a really nice guy but the class was painfully boring.

Colin certainly cares about his students, plus he has a good sense of humor. He is easy to listen to and gives great handouts so you can listen instead of writing every word down. He really knows his stuff, too. The exam questions from his section of the course were pretty reasonable, but I haven't yet seen how they got graded.

His lectures are great and very organized. He's very concerned about the students learning and his lectures are very structured, so you'll never get lost. Although the material for this course is very dry, Colin helps you through it.

K, Professor= excellent. Subject [Linguistics]= really really boring. Careful with the tree drawing. Its so pointless you won't want to study it. Try to get Tim as your TA. Sure I got an A in the class, but this was after numerous whining sessions.

Prof Wilson is a great guy. He really cares about his students' learning - one time he even tried to make us stick our pens into our mouths so we could see what positions our tongues were in when we pronounce vowels. if a student gives a wrong answer, he never criticizes but gently corrects him/her and is always willing to listen to students' ideas about the material being covered (though sometimes this leads to boring tangents). His lectures are easy to follow because of his handouts. Exams are easier than homework.
