All Ratings and Reviews for Cynthia Strathmann
I took Anthro and the Media from Prof. Strathmann and really enjoyed the class. There were a few weeks where the reading was overwhelmingly dense, but for the most part it was very manageable. There are two 3-page papers and then a paper at the end where the first two are combined and a third part is added. Prof. Strathmann was more than willing to discuss my topic with me and help me work through the theory. As long as you pay attention, the tests aren't too bad. I'd recommend this class.
wow. i did not have the same experience as the other reviewee. yes, her class was easy, but no it wasn't a great learning experience. i felt like i was taking a class with a grad student. she was very caught up in other stuff she was doing, and her lectures were very, ponderously, theoretical. the readings, on the other hand, were very informative and easier to understand. also, i felt like i was learning "i hate capitalism 101," but i'm sure a lot of students enjoy that type of thing. the structure: midterm of fill in the blank and short answer, a short presentation on an ethnography, and final of fill in the blank and short answer. i think that was it. last thing: if you do the reading then youre set for the exams.
Although she talks really fast during her lectures, she is still a very good teacher. We had 2 papers and a midterm and a final. The papers were not that hard and the exams are not that bad. She has essay parts on her exams which she tells u from before what they are going to be. Overall, it was a really interesting class and she is a great professor!
i took anthropology and the media with strathmann and she was great. she is really nice and very approachable. although the reading got a bit heavy once in a while, it is easy to manage and get a good grade in her class. she is really funny... definitely recommend her as well as the class!
She is a very engaging professor, which was a definite plus for an 8:30 am class. I took this class during summer school which made it more rushed that it should have been, but she describes everything very well. If you do the readings, although extensive, and pay attention in lecture, the class is really easy. The grade is divided up between two papers, an in-class project, a midterm and a final. It sort of feels like she makes her tests so easy that she probably laughs at the people who do poorly. A great professor and a great class.
I agree with most of the comments written by other students here. I took comparative religion with her and it was the most fun Anthro class I've had. She had us do many interesting group activities in class and the class is worth enrolling in just for that reason. Also, unlike a lot of other professors, Prof Strathmann will actually get back to you on a question you asked her in class that she wasn't sure she knew the answer. I used to think when professors say they will "look it up" somewhere it only means they don't know and they dont care because they will never get back to you. But I think Prof Strathmann likes it when you ask her things like that because that way she also learns about new things from her students.
One advice I would give to anyone interested taking her class is use a tape recorder. It will be really useful if you can't write fast or are not able to digest the lecture as you are writing notes quickly because she talks really really fast. You will miss some things she mentions in class no matter how fast you can write, so be sure to ask her to slow down or repeat things once in a while.
Prof. Strathmann is great! She's young, fun, intelligent, and honest. She cares SOOOOO much about student learning. Her class is well-paced, well-focused, and well-planned. Her lectures aren't the best I've ever had, but they're still engaging. It's like she's your really intersting friends holding your hand through some really good info to wrap your head around while and undergrad! Take this class! It's easy, but not boringly so. It's "consciousness raising" in the greatest way. Have I convinced you? Good.
Professor Strathmann is probably one of the most humbling anthro teachers I've met. She never sounds pompus or makes anyone feel stupid. Her class was like a breathe of fresh air in such a stuffy department. Yes, she tends to talk fast but she's always willing to repeat herself if you ask her. It's not an easy class but if you do what's required as a student which is attend class, read the materials, and take notes you should get a B or better. You must READ the articles because 25% of the exam, is just the reading!! Her lectures are mixed with fun group activities and movies so there is no reason for anyone to fall asleep. The only concern I have with this professor is that because she is so nice there was a tendancy for a couple of students to dominate the class by always having something annoying to say!! Other than that she's the best Anthro teacher I've had.
