He's a pretty hardcore guy, but he knows what he's talking about. Good teacher, it's stressful and hard if you get caught behind early.

Brizoles was super boring. He spent way to much time on proofs that nobody understood or cared to learn because they aren't tested. I thought we was an okay lecturer overall. Taking the class with him isn't the worst thing in the world, but it also isn't the best. The midterm/final practice exams are super helpful though!

Quarter: Fall 2017

Likes to do a lot of proofs that don’t really apply to class. Can go on tangents of one problem that isn’t necessary. Easy to understand, talks loudly. Funny and entertaining. There are about 3 or 4 quizzes per quarter. Warns you what’s going to be on quizzes. Much easier than tests. Tests are much harder than homework. Likes to use trig identities. Gives you old tests to study from, which is best to study from because he uses problems from old tests rather than homework questions.

Brezolis was not the best teacher. Often made mistakes on the board and spent way too long going through proofs that we were not responsible for knowing for midterms. He gives 2 midterms and a final, homework due every lecture. Surprise quizzes every couple weeks. Class was too much work for an introductory calculus class. Get a different prof if you can.

Professor Brizolis' class had a nice difficulty level. I still had to work hard in the class to earn my grade even though I had taken calculus already. His class consists of two midterms, and for both of them he gave us practice midterms that were EXTREMELY similar to the real ones. He always posted answers and went over them in class. For the final he gave us several practice tests and answers as well. He provides everything and more for his students to pass the class. He does teach proofs during lecture but never expected us to learn/memorize them for a test. He also does a couple of quizzes during the quarter that aren't worth much and very easy if you know what is going on. I would recommend his class if you want a strong calculus foundation and a teacher who cares.

These people below are out of their minds. This class was impossible to do well in despite intense studying or going to office hours - even going to the Math Help Center. His tests are much more difficult than quizzes or the homework he assigns, and it shows in the class averages for them.

Don't be fooled by reviews like those. Unless you're a savage math god, there is a chance you will struggle in this class. Take whatever other professors are available. His bruinwalk rating should NOT be that high.

He is a very fair professor and gives a lot of hints during lectures and office hours about the types of questions he'll give on the midterms and finals. Most of the questions on his finals are very expected so if you prepare in advance you should be fine (he literally gave us so many past midterms/finals to work with). The 2 midterms are way more tight on time than the final so the final should be easier. His lectures are based on theory but are very useful to understand the math. If you have taken calculus before this class should be fine.

Professor Brizolis is a very nice and genuine guy. He enjoys teaching, and it shows. With that being said, this is not an easy class. You will get homework after every lecture (3 times a week), while other 31a classes only give homework once a week. Additionally, Brizolis likes to "challenge" his students, as he assumes that students have taken high school calc and wants to teach them new stuff. This means that his test problem types are unique, and studying practice tests from other professors will generally be useless. I would highly recommend going to AS MANY OFFICE HOURS AS POSSIBLE, as it helps you learn his teaching styles and the theorems/concepts he emphasizes. I did well in high school calc, and this was still my hardest class by far. But, overall, Brizolis is a fair grader and a cool dude just to talk to.

This class is no joke. I came in with a solid math background from AP Calc AB, so I'd seen all of the concepts covered in the class before. I even thought I had a pretty grasp on how to do all of the problems. Even still, I was woefully unprepared for the midterms.

The midterms were the most ridiculous questions I'd ever seen in my life. I got an A on both quizzes given out in section, yet barely pulled a D on the midterms. Plus, you only have 50 minutes. Nobody ever finished early.

Brizolis himself is a nice guy and is super helpful in office hours. The homework can be pretty difficult so I was always in there asking for help. His lectures are all proof-based, though. Don't expect him to do any practice problems.

Like someone else said, this class is for the brave and the savage math gods. I would highly discourage anyone from taking this class unless you're incredibly confident in your calculus prowess.
