All Ratings and Reviews for Douglas Durian
Re: Physics 6A/Winter 2001
I believe that Dr. Durian's lecture style was very organized and quite clear. The other individuals that have rated him have excluded this part in its entirety. He understands the concepts well and tries hard to convey it to the students. He has a strong command of the material. I have also been to his office hours but I did not really get the vibe that he was making you feel stupid. However it was not the most pleasant experience. The problem with his class are his exams. They are tough. The averages speak for themselves. The first midterm median was 67% which was quite o.k. Yet only 4 weeks later on the second midterm, the median was 49% And the exams are worth at least 70% of your grade. That is the only reason why students dropped. The problem sets were quite doable at least after a review with the TA for at least an hour in the discussion section. Yet he only used Bruinsma notes which was bad and not the serway text like all other physics classes. Even though his lectures were quite clear, they were not indicative in the least bit about his exams. He never gave his own review sessions like most science professors on this campus. His exams were worded in the most awkward sense and the problems were complex and conceptual. Do not take any class with him. If you want to take physics 6A, take Waung and only Waung.
I had Durian a couple of years ago..but I'd like to say he is bad..very bad. He messed up my grade at end of course...I had to go to his office and fix it. Plus, the final was bad...very unfair....all the questions were on coaxial cable....Umm..coaxial cable is only mentioned on a half a page in the book we used!
Most horrible instructor ever
I think Prof Durian should be teaching elementary school. I mean the way he explains things in lecture, and the way he talks to you like you are an idiot gets pretty frustrating. After the first midterm in physics 6A people stop coming to class, (it was at 9am), so he got mad when the class average wasn't too high on the second midterm. Speaking of seperate midterm. I really hate the way he put everyone, who didn't get an A or B on the first midterm, in one room so they could take the second one. I felt like the reject, loser room or something. I just didn't like this guy period. Folks tell me I should have taken Waung!
Try to avoid Durian if you can, he uses Bruinsma, which is not helpful at all and his exams are quite difficult, and he gets this annoying smile on his face after every sentence, it's kind of aggravating.
Professor Durian claims that student understanding of the material is his first goal but he doesn't teach how to do your homework. He expects you to figure that out on your own and he'll just give you a few equations and if you're lucky will apply it to a problem. He doen'st go through all the steps while explaining things and he doesn't seem very outgoing to his students. Office hours aren't much more of a help, he'll just tell you if you have the answer right or not, he won't help you with the answer he'll just try to guide you in the right direction. This is fine, but the Bruinsma notes for Physics 6a is so poorly written that the only way to really understand what is going on is to get help from your professor.
Prof Durian is by FAR the worst professor I've had at UCLA. It's a shame that the worst professor has to teach one of the harder classes. He knows his stuff really well and expects you to be able to pick it up with his limited lecturing skills. Also, he'll make you feel stupid if you ask him questions outside of lecture. Avoid him like the plague.
As Prof Durian pranced around the room, I was surprised his loafers didn't float away right in front of us. Not only does he talk down to anyone who doesn't understand the lecture, he seems to find an annoying pleasure in making students hate him, always maintaining that flaming grin on his face. During one midterm, he reported 8 different people to the dean for cheating. Are you kidding me? Talk about hating your students. What ever happened to teaching and wanting students to learn what you know? It's like he personally tries to sink you from day one. If you take Durian, you'll end up wanting to choke his little neck and slam his head in the sliding chalk board, so don't take him. But if you do have him, go for it.
Durian is a complete an udder pile. People giving this guy good reviews have their head where the sun don't shine. This guy would much rather go home and prance around in pink panties than see his students learn the material he is trying to convey. His lectures are a barrage of nonsense, and when students ask questions to help understand his jibberish, he answers them the same way as the rest of his lecture, not making any sense and not making any attempt to make the material understandable. Doug enjoys watching students suffer and probably goes home and tells his "partner" all about it. Take this class if you would like to come out of it everyday hating life and your proffessor.
This teacher sucks!!!!! He makes you feel very stupid. If you end up with this professor, do NOT pay attention to the grade break down. Your grade for the course is based on the final...though he doesn't tell you that during the quarter.
