All Ratings and Reviews for Douglas W Hollan
I really enjoyed this class! There were three books we had to read, the first I found a little harder to understand than the later two. After each book we wrote a paper that tied the book to smaller articles that were assigned. The grade breakdown was as follows:
Three short essay papers: 70%
Two short-in section exams: 20%
Discussion Participation: 10%
In addition to the papers we had "short in-section exams." In reality these were just defining terms from lecture and the articles, super easy!! The lectures were initially not recorded, but he decided to record them a few weeks in. Even though the lectures just consisted of him talking with no powerpoint I found them easy to follow and engaging! Overall, the class did have a good amount of reading, but I thought it was a super interesting and easy class!! Definitely take!!
Professor Hollan is the best anthropology professor that I have taken at UCLA. In fact, his anthropology 9 class convinced me to be an anthro. major. I highly recommend his classes to anyone
Professor Hollan is OK in big classes like Anthro 9, but he's great in smaller, upper-division classes. The reading amount is average, but is integrated well with lecture and exams. He's great to talk to in office hours and is genuinely concerned about his students.
Excellent professor, I wish I had more professors like him at UCLA. I took his Deviance class which introduces psych anthro. His lectures are very enjoyable and the reading is great...
i took anthro 9 with him and expected something different than what he offered. the books he chose were really interesting with the exception of the core concepts book. his tests were fair and the projects were not too bad. it was generally pretty interesting and if you pay attention, he emphasizes exactly what he wants you to know.
Professor Hollan is just an awesome person who inspires me and many other students with his genuine concern for us as people. He is a great teacher and really does have the most interesting stories.
His lectures are very clear and to the point, and i liked his psychological approach towards explaining some of the concepts and ideas in Anthropology 9, that it also inspired me to take his upper division 135S course ,which i highly recommend if you are interested in linking how the works of the mind is affected by culture
I recommend taking one of Professor Hollan's classes. There is decent amount of reading, which even I was able to do, and he goes over the important information in lecture. He has interesting stories from the research he has done. I actually applied what I learned in his classes in the real world. He is one of the better professors that I have had at UCLA.
Hollan was a decent teacher (Anthro 9). His lectures were well organized, however they are for an hour and 15 minutes and it gets hard to stay awake. It's not a difficult class but there is a LOT of reading so, like the previous commenter said, don't expect a free ride. Also you have to go to discussion for points which sucks if it's at 8 in the morning. The tests were fair and came from lecture and reading. Overall I did learn a lot from him but wish i had realized about the reading amount because i didn't want to spend as much time on it as i did.
I took him for Anthro 9 and found him to be extremely knowledgable. The lectures cover all that is on the test, and he intertvines his expertise in the subject well to really demostrate his points. There are tons of concepts and information on is responsible for, so watch out!!!! Don't take this class for a good grade expecting not to do the work. Good class to take P/NP grading.
