I found the several of Professor Light's classes that I attended are very interesting and intelligent. He did an excellent job to communicate the best knowledge/theory/methodology to his students. I also enjoy his humours remarks in classes. He is real cool.

Well organized course in which the various components were dlivered on time. No nonsense, but highly worthwhile.

I really liked this professor and the class. At times the material is rather dry but he does a great job explaining it. He gives out the midterm and final questions before each exam so if you can get into groups and divide the questions you will do well on them. He also offers an extra credit paper that can boost your grade by 10 points. Go to lecture and discussion. BTW, he seems distant and unapproachable during lecture but if you go to his office hours, he is the nicest guy and spends a lot of time answering questions. Overall, a worthwhile and informative class.

professor light. what can i say. he is definitely an interesting character. he has one of the funniest pictures on bruinwalk.com. look it up its worth it. as for his teaching skillz, he is a genious. master of immigration policies. he likes to make his hand L shape and point it up as he lectures and he looks like the german shepard in all dogs go to heaven. i love the guy. definitely take his class

His lectures are boring and the entire course isn't focused enough. There's so much information but the course isn't organized well so students are left listening to loosely connected statistics and points he brushes over. The TA is also doesn't have good communication skills at all so with the two of them put together, if you want to pass you'd have to memorize every reading. My suggestion is to find another class.

Pretty boring stuff, the class introduction sounded interesting, but a lot of the things we learned had too many statistics that were unnecessary, I got a B+ so you won't think I did bad and complained.

Horrid! I'm taking his Sociology 172 class currently, and I have to say that it's the most boring class I've ever taken at UCLA. Sitting through lecture is the longest hour and 15 minutes of your life. There are wayyyyy too many books to be bought, and they're not very critical to the learning process. Of all the books to be bought, the 2 most expensive are his.

First off, this guy isn't going to pretend like he likes his job or you. Nevertheless, if you aren't intimidated by his comportment and wish to challenge his mind, you will find that he has a lot of meaningful stuff to say. Pick his brain if you indeed like sociology and want to learn. I get the feeling like he may be the brightest sociology professor I've had. I've talked to many old-timers who agree.

As a lecturer, he is not the most entertaining. Dry speaking style and dry humor, but everything he says is substantive. The readings are very extensive; perhaps a bit too extensive for someone who expects to learn key points and get a grade. But if you wish to learn and have a thorough understanding of [insert class title], I would not hesitate to take his class.

Professor Light seems to be a very concerned and educated teacher. However, being that I am not a Soc major, I do not find the information he dispenses of much use. The info would probably be much more interesting to a Soc person. That said, he is nice and his classes are not full of the blah, blah, blah that most South Campus classes are.
