All Ratings and Reviews for Jeffrey B Valle
Valle is an amazing professor and is reallly good and getting the information across. The format of the tests is different than in other classes but not too bad if you understand the concepts. I HIGHLY recommend him.
I took 101 with Valle, and he was great. The vietnam lecture is a little superfluous, but the rest of the info is organized well, and presented clearly and consisely. The test accurately measures how well you know the material, along with your ability to argue and present it. There are 2-4 essay questions, usually, that give you a scenario, and you use the precedent and case law to gauge the constitutionality of the given statutes. He teaches legal analysis using the IRAQ model for all you pre-law junkies who know what I'm talking about. And for comm students--even if you know you dont like law, it really gives you valuable info about communication precedent and important critical thinking/analysis skills. 101 is overall, a fair course.
On a personal note, I loved it--it's what made me decide to go to law school. I hung out w/ Valle in office hours and he is really great. Very open about his experience both as a law student, lawyer and professor. I even did an honors contract w/ him about the legality of the FDA's restrictions on tobacco advertising (by the way--arguable, but NOT LEGAL!!)
Com197, the propaganda course was amazing! I would recommend taking that course if you had to stand in the hall and listen through the crack in the door. I pretty much had to, it was so popular; I ended up sitting on the floor all quarter, but it was worth it. Definately take the class, and if you dont, get the book for the hell of it. 'Manufacturing Consent' by Chompsky (and someone else, i forget). Definately a leftist perspective, but even the staunch conservatives will find something to enjoy in the course, even if its just to make your blood boil and tone the arguing skills. If you do decide to take it, a word to the wise: sign up with your first pass, it'll fill up immediately. Good luck
Very good teacher who uses a law school type approach to his classes. If you are the kind of person who justs likes to memorize and regurgitate, this isnt the class for you. Valle makes you think of how to apply law to different situations, which is what you are going to do if you are a lawyer. Very interesting class, and it helps that Valle himself still practices law. You even get to study a case that he tried (and its one he has lost, so you know his ego is not a problem), so you know he knows what he is talking about. Very engaging though he jumps around in his lectures. His TA's are very helpful in breaking down cases and teaching the applications. Very highly recommended.
Valle defintely has a lot to offer for this course. He is very interested in the material, and that shows in the way he lectures. The only problem is that sometimes he can get a little off track and carried away. Make sure you get Mike as your TA, and he'll make sure you know the stuff thats important.
I took this class several years ago, because I thought it was an interesting topic (and I needed a non-major course). It was a great class - lectures were interesting enough and the material (despite having to read Supreme Court cases) was easy to understand once you got used to the legal stuff. The part I didn't really like was going to discussion - we had an 8am section with like 5 people in class and like no one would show up so participation for those of us who did go was a big thing.
I got an A in the class. One of the best classes I've taken at UCLA ever.
He is seriously one of the most entertaining professors I've had at UCLA. It takes a lot for me to stay awake during a three hour class and he only made me fall asleep a couple of times. The information is really interesting. You should definitely take this class if you are interested in law. His lectures are really engaging. The tests are not too difficult, it's just that you have to know a lot of information.
Valle has in-depth knowledge in his speciality, which is communication law. His Comm. 101 course can be demanding, since you are reading through some 10 supreme court rulings and must know them for the exams. He does teach a Comm. 197 course on propaganda, which was great. Take it, because he really go beyond the common consiparcy theory and give you the hard evidence of propaganda in this free country. It a course that will change the way you perceive media, really eye-opening.
valle is very organized in his lectures and an overall good professor. the class itself is not easy though. The midterm and final can be difficult and you need to prepare for it. If you remember each of the rules/tests from each case you will be fine.
This professor has his S#!t together. Very confident lecturer, and you will learn a lot. I studied very hard and got a B+, not the easiest class, but very useful.
Valle is great! I really enjoyed his lectures, he is dynamic and very well organized. The lectures were interesting and read like stories (more like a history class than comm). Tests were long (I was there all three hours furiously writing during the final) but kind of fun to take, very straightforward and easy to study for (I just studied the day before). Don't buy the reader, it is useless!!! I never opened it once and I got an A. Section isn't necessary either. I never went once. Just go to lecture, take good notes, and memorize the rules. Simple, fun, informative...
