Definitely one of my favorite professors here. After not doing so hot in 30A, I went to Dr. Chang's office hours after the first lecture to ask him how I can get an A in his class. He gave me some really helpful strategies that when combined with hard work ultimately gave me an A- in the course. Dr. Chang somehow makes chemistry understandable, and his sense of humor was the highlight of the class. Highly recommended!!!

Dr. Chang is hands down the best and most approachable professor that I have had at UCLA. I took Chem 30B with him and I found it to be extremely challenging, but I put in the effort by attending all of Dr. Chang's office hours and by developing a thorough understanding of the material. Dr. Chang is extremely conscious of what it is like to be a student, which sets him apart from most of the professors at UCLA because I genuinely felt like his goal was to educate the next generation of scientists, as opposed to just teach the class and get back to his research. I ended up doing very well in his class, and developed a personal relationship with Dr. Chang, culminating in a fantastic letter of recommendation and advice for my future.
If you are considering taking a class with Dr. Chang, take it, and put in as much time as you have because while his course is challenging, he will reward you for your effort and he is 100% on the side of the student.

Dr. Chang was a great professor, and extremely fair. His exams came from what he emphasized in lecture, office hours and homework. If you just did your assignments and spent one hour at his office hours a week you can easily get an A, and really understand the material. He is also a very friendly guy. If he ever teachers for any chemistry class-take him! He's the best.

Dr. Chang is the best professor I have had at UCLA. The first day of class he was extremely friendly, so I decided to go to his office hours. Not only was he a good teacher in class, but he was even better in office hours. There was a large group of us who would attend these OH, and I couldn't believe the effort he put in to actually learn our names. Honestly, he is an outstanding teacher. Unlike many lectures at UCLA, falling asleep in his was impossible. He kept my attention the whole time. He created a lot of class participation with the 350 students in my class. It was quite impressive, especially when he started calling out people by name. I know this man truly cares about his students, because he respected us like no other professor I’ve had before. By the end of the class, it even felt normal and acceptable to call him by his first name, Jonah. (Now how often does that happen for having a professor for 10 weeks in a class of 350?)

I took this class during Winter of 2013. Dr. Chang is quite new to teaching which I think is a good think because he still remembers what it is like to be a student.

The course is very fast paced and a lot of reactions are thrown at you starting from day 1 but he breaks the material down very well. Exams are a bit difficult but totally what you would expect for an Ochem class at UCLA.

Practice a lot and go to office hours and the A is yours. and he is hilarious which is always nice.

Dr. Chang is literally one of my favorite profs I've ever had. He's not only hilarious, but he knows his stuff and is amazing at teaching it. Go to his office hours, sit up front, and ask questions often.

I had Dr. Chang for 30B, and he is literally my favorite professor that I've had at UCLA. He knows his stuff, but more than that, he knows what will be complicated for students to understand and is able to break it down very easily. Also, he has the best sense of humor and is a great lecturer- so class is actually fun AND you learn things. I really wish I could have had him for more than one class!! Hands down a great professor and a great person!

Tips: do the practice midterms, and if you don't understand it ASK during office hours and the tests will be super doable!

Best teacher I have had at UCLA. Not only does he care about his students, he has a great sense of humor. I am normally afraid of chemistry teachers, but he was very approachable and made engineering level organic chemistry seem like a piece of cake. His tests were challenging yes, but if you studied well, you would do fine on them. I highly recommend you take his class, because without this class I would not have had the confidence to do well in 30C. He honestly cares about his students, something that can be hard to find in science classes. The class is structured well, 2 midterms and a final. You will be prepared for each very well. Go to his review sessions, go to his office hours, and get to know an awesome professor!

The most hilarious teacher I have had at UCLA. I was in his first ever class and it was awesome. The first day, he went super fast and I wanted to drop out. But all you have to do is do the practice test questions and understand lecture notes and you are good. Memorizing is key. He actually has a personality, and it sarcastic, which makes the class even better. Take him. If you study hard, you will be fine, it is definitely not an impossible class

This cat is the most boss chemistry prof I've had at UCLA in terms of approachability. Ironically, I never did approach him (other than shaking his hand after the final), but I can say that what helped me want to learn the material was his wonderful sense of humor and his genuine aura as an educator. By the latter, I mean that he really wants you to learn, and, if you let him engage you, you will. His teaching is doubly enhanced by his love for the subject itself - this guy's a true, purist, staunch organic chemist and is balls-out proud of it.
His tests are on the tricky side, but what can you do, right? O-chem. Dat shit hurtz.
I didn't have to take 30C because it's not required of my major, but Dr. Chang's class convinced me to finish the series.

Prediction: Pre-meds currently taking his Chem 14 class are gonna flip the fuck out on this wall come beginning of Winter Break. Watch.

P.S. For anyone planning to take 30B in general, I recommend you take this class before 30AL. You learn theory here and application in lab. I don't know why UCLA doesn't bother to sequence them.
