Prof. Tamanoi is not a strong lecturer. She favors a post modern approach to anthropology, which became a bit too "politcally correct" for me to handle.

Professor Tamanoi is an excellent professor who is very sensitive to the nuances that are necesarry when teaching cultural anthropology. Although she has a soft voice, which makes one want to sit up front, she is very clear in what she is saying. SHe is an excellent teacher.

she is one of the worst prof ever. She basically repeats what is already on the overhead. Her lectures provides no mean of critical thinking whatsoever.

the most boring class ive taken yet at UCLA...very nice professor but horrible class it sounds interesting but the readings could not be more boring and irrelevant to the study of the cultural from childrens perspective...i could not stay for the whole hour and fifteen minutes she just reads exactly what is on the power point...dont take 130 with her just a waste of $$$ and time..

She's very SWEET but unfortunetly it's up to her TA's to do the grading. So if you have a crappy TA your screwd!! I agree with the person who wrote the comment below mine about that particular TA. If you get her make sure you switch out of that section. She's real nice outside of class but when it comes to grading she SUCKS! You have to be interested in Tamanoi's subject matter or you'll definetly die of boredom. I think that's why it's usually only Anthro students who like her. Don't bother tape recording the class just download her lectures right before and that's all you'll need to do.

i agree that her lectures are overly reliant on the powerpoints. it means that you don't really need to come to every class, because her lecturing will stay pretty close to the slides. she's funny, and very nice, easy to approach with questions. she is overly vague on her requirements for tests, but i found the midterm in 130 to be pretty easy, and felt well-prepared for it by her study guide. i don't love my ta (jess) and don't feel like she's very interested in her students, but i find section to be helpful, in that she does tie it all together. i loved 175S, except the book by dorinne kondo was pretty painful to read. her classes are not exciting, and neither is she, but they are interesting, satisfying and fair.

Prof. Tamanoi is an exceptional teacher and a very warm and considerate person. She is obviously well versed in her field and also deeply concerned about the world around her. You must be well prepared for class to understand her subtle style. Obviously, if you go to class to see a circus and to memorize and regurgitate at the end of the quarter, then don't bother.

I had to drop her class, it was soooo boring. She does not stay on topic, and the readings are just awful. Avoid!

ANTHRO 163R Submitted March 17, 2003 Grade Received: N/A

Like the others say, extremely nice lady, mediocre lecturer. The readings are rather dry, but on the plus side I didnt read any of them and got an A anyway, so the grading scale is pretty easy. If you're into Japan, she does cover some interesting stuff, so I'd recommend her on the whole, but dont expect edge of your seat excitement. Oh, also she will say the phrase "And so on and so forth" literally 7-8 times per class. Just so you know.

Her lectures were very difficult to follow. Unless you love cultural anthropology, don't take any of her courses.
