I entered this class with an extremely open mind. I had heard that Dr. Bates was a hard but exceptional professor and, having had that same experience with Dr. Luceigh, I expected to have to work hard in her class but really appreciate her teaching. Well, kids, I was DEAD WRONG!!!!! I found her to be unapproachable and I realized that not only is she hard, but she seriously believes that biochemistry is the only class for which you should study! I had no time for any of my other courses because of her unreasonably demanding course. Yes, she is a good teacher in that you learn a heck of a lot of information in her class. However, there is way too much information to remember by the final. I don't agree with those who say that taking Bates is worth it because you will remember all the biochem information for the MCAT because that is not the case for everyone. I'd rather have a reasonable professor in whose class I can study hard and do well. I had a solid A going into the final and ended up with a B. Although I studied harder than I have ever studied in my life, the final consisted of the hardest, most random questions. Only an evil genius could have come up with that exam. Beware!!!

Very organized prof. as seen by her reader. Teaches Biochem. the way it is supposed to be taught..w/ understanding at the end. However, the final was a KILLER.

She is an easy A if you show any inititative. If you want to pass the class, then she is your professor. However if you want to learn biochemistry, she is not doing the job. She is about high school style disciplne and memorizing the facts. Want a real professor take Dr. Marinson.

Dr. Bates was one of the most organized professors that I've ever had. She really has a feel for what the students need to understand the material; the amount of extra help she makes available makes it nearly impossible to mess up. Highly recommended!!

Dr. Bates is an outstanding professor. She is genuinely concerned about the students' learning as well as comprehension of the material. I have never studied as hard as her class, but I didn't even know it. She has a way of teaching that studying seems like a piece of cake. She's a wonderful help outside of class, extremely approachable. She is the best biochemistry professor in the department and I highly recommend her.

Bates is an alright teacher. She's pretty organized and her compendium is all you need. I personally didnt goto class that often and still ended up with an A (and trust me im not that smart, my gpa is 3.4). If you plan to take the MCAT, Bates is an absolute MUST. She hooks u up with the material. Every passage on the MCAT that deals with biochem will seem extermely easy after this class. BIG MISTAKE if you're pre-med and take the class with another professor. If you're not pre med you're better of taking with Clubb or Martinson

CHEM 153A Submitted Jan. 9, 2002 Grade Received: N/A

Pro: very organized in lectures and lecture notes. She always try to make the class and biochemistry interesting. You don't have to open the textbook at all since the exams are based on her lectures only.

Contra: Her exams are hard, partly because biochemistry is a hard subject.

Tips: Study every week, do all the problems, study well for the quizzes, and always give yourself time to review the past exams.

Wonderful teacher! The best professor I have ever had in any department. She is a very nice person as well. The class is very easy. There is no excuse not to get an A in Chem 153A with Dr. Bates. She spoon feeds all the information you need. All the info is in the reader and if you do and understand all the practice problems (and there is not that many)you will definately get an A+ in the class. The is not a class to be missed. Trust me! It is also a lot of fun as she has the best lecturing skills I have ever seen and she keeps the class interesting with jokes and her lively personality.

Professor Bates is very organized professor. She tries to make her lectures more interesting for the students by employing skits & memorization games. Overall I would say she is a good lecturer. Study her compendium (MUST!) her exams are based mainly on her compendium which is also very well organized. ANDREA was the BEST TA!!! EXCELLENT!
