Professor Sawyer teaches like a graduate study teacher does. He does not baby his students and relies on them to take the initiative in class discussions. In our seminar, there were no bullshit quizes or anything, he left it up to us to learn for ourselves and he wanted us to get an overall understanding of the racial dynamics in Latin America and to really empathize with the black position. I really respect him; his knowlege on the subject and how he does not condescend his students. I would recommend people to take a class from him, but only if you are confident enough and interested in learning the subject matter, doing the readings, etc. so that you can fully take advantage of how much Sawyer knows and can teach you.

I hardly ever went to class and got a B. He's cool, but since I was never there I don't know details lmao. It was a new class they were introducing, race and labor or some crap (M 165), so there were some mishaps with the midterm. basically it was thrown together and a piece of shit. But he made it up by making the final paper easy and making it worth 70% of our grade if we choose that route. I did. Worked for me. A lot of my friends really like him, but I don't think I'd purposefully take another one of his classes outside of familiarity.

Don't mind the course, it wasn't on the list. I took M165.

Professor Sawyer is overall a really cool guy. He is very laid back and has a good attitude. A lot of the time he gets caught up going off on tangents, but most of the stuff he talks about is relevant and enjoys sparking dialogue with students about anything that comes up. He is a little full of himself at times and loves to tell stories about himself, but he has accomplished a lot and he's a great person to get to know!

Very disappointing. Opinionated, arrogant, disrespectful, unprepared, unavailable. That's what my tuition dollars are going? Geesh.

nice professor, knows his stuff, he goes on a lot of tangents you end up watching random videos about stuff which is some what interesting. The reading tends to be boring and redundant. If your interested in latin american politics and racism, go for it. Class is structured off of a take home midterm and a take home final. midterm- gave us 3 prompts on thursday, you answer 2 and turn it on on monday at 5 on , final is 4 essays you pick 3 and answer them got the final a week in advance. It somewhat depends on your TA because they grade the essays but they inform you on what they are looking for. Summary= decently easy, but really boring if your not interested in the subject matter.

I'd have to disagree with the evaluation below. I took PS154C- Black experience in latin America. It was a really interesting class, different from any political science class i'd taken before. His lectures were pretty interesting, we watched a lot of film as we learned about concepts of race relations and Afro-Latinos. For my class, he only had two assignments a take home midterm and final, worth 80% of your grade overall and 20% for discussion. This class was a lot of reading and writing but I thought it was very interesting. The lectures are podcasted online to review or just watch from home, i went to class made half of the time and got an A in the class

The difficulty of the course depends on which TA you get, but the class is profoundly enriching! You will learn and discuss about topics that are very different from other political science courses. It gives you a better perspective on societies and race relations. There is a lot of reading and writing, and by no means can you get away with not reading b/c of the quizzes and participation grade. However, you don't have to attend lecture to do well in the class--just do the readings. I wouldn't say it's an "easy A," but it's doable and worth it, in my opinion. You get what you put into it.

Professor Sawyer is the best professor I have taken while at UCLA. He is very concerned about his students and he is always willing to make time for his students. The clarity in which he relays coursework content can be attributed to his mastery of urban politics and political theory thus making it easier for his students to comprehend the material. He is definately a wonderful Professor.

prof. sawyer's class was interesting to say the least. his lecture style can be sort of dry and boring when he drones on at times. he does put up slides during his lecture so it is easy to follow along. his midterm was multiple choice; the final was a take home two essays. the first was drawn from an event currently happening in the area and applying what you learned in class; the second was based on the readings itself. what hurt this class was the fact he passed out the final the week after the midterm, so i felt no motivation to return the last two weeks of the class.

the material is interesting. the reader was very interesting and actually fun to read. overall, the class is fun to take but i was glad i was in it for summer sessions.
