I'm not a feminist, or a geographer, but I still got a lot out of this class. Prof. Thomas does a good job, not great but good, teaching without letting her own beliefs come through too strongly. The class was interesting, there was a lot of reading but it wasn't impossible. I learned a lot, studied a LOT, and ended up with an 89.45 which was still a B+.

I took this course over the summer and I thought it would be overwhelming with the amount of reading (which wasn't as much as other profs). However, with the subject material (although I have to admit not everything was always interesting) being mostly interesting, it was relevant to what we were learning. I highly recommend going to class; listening to her and learning from her is the reason to take a class with her. The reason I got an A is because of this professor; very highly motivational and conducive to learning.
Exam style: 1 essay (although you get to choose from several...probably would be more during the quarter) and ID's (the amount of ID's assigned can get ridiculous, I advise getting together with a group). I was out of the actual exam in an hour.
Grading Policy: She grades on participation! She might also give you a few surprises (i.e. pop quiz, ask you to write your view point, etc). Once again, go to class (which isn't a hardship), you'll be fine. Speak up, you've got opinions so let her know you do.
Lecturing: She's very animated, funny, which makes some of the more boring subjects easier to deal with.
Hope this helps!

she is awsome...she was always around and helped us put together an honors section. she is so nice and down to earth. i really liked the way she split up the grade into 3 midterms and NO final so that it was easier to earn your grade without much stress. she also posted her lectures and had great articles to read...the best thing was NOOOO reader to buy. take her class and you will not regret it.

Professor Thomas is an amazing individual with a lot to say. I've taken two of her classes and plan to take my third and final class with her in the Fall (2004), as I am graduating in December. The workload is very reasonable and the essays require critical thinking but not memorization of tiny details. Take her! She's fabulous!

Talk about real-world-relevant; excellent class I had no idea that geography could be as real as she made it.

Prof. Thomas is one of the best professors here at UCLA. No BS. While some may complain about the material, it doesn't get any straight forward than this. I did well in every class that I've taken with her & learned something menaningful. Geography is everywhere!

awesome professor. she's very friendly, approachable, and knows her stuff! i've yet to have a professor that is so caring, and at the same time, knowledgable in her field. her lectures are pretty interesting..she keeps you engaged with all the material by asking questions, trying to keep the class atmosphere interactive. i would definitely take her class...workload isn't overwhelming..the amount of reading she gives is definitely reasonable and the articles (just one reader) are actually really interesting. TAKE HER CLASS! SHE'S WONDERFUL!

She's fun, she's passionate about her work, but take away her notes and the class is useless. She practically reads off her notes during class, sometimes even pausing because she forgot her place in the page. I don't think she's taught that many years so she still needs time to lecture from her mind and experiences, and not soley from her sheets of notes.

She's not the best at explaining things, but she does try. She encourages class interaction which is good...her reader was relatively short and the readings were reasonable...and she shows a good amount of videos which is always a plus.

She does give you an outline of everything you need to know for the midterm and final, so there isn't much room to complain if you do poorly. I wouldn't recommend her unless you're a geography or social science major; otherwise it's not the best class for a GE (material is too dry) and it's definitely not an easy A.

she makes the class interesting even if you are not interested in the topic. she gives a full outline and examples to what is going to be on the midterm and final. so study and you will do well.

I originally wanted to transfer out of this class during first week (b/c of the early morning MWF time slot) but ended up staying because Thomas was such an interesting and likable professor. Even with a class of 100+ she really made an effort to learn names and get to know students. She definitely cares a lot about the class understanding the material and her review sheets for the midterm and final were practically like advanced copies of the tests. She's pretty funny too and is good at keeping the class engaged in lectures.
