All Ratings and Reviews for Michael Fishbein
It was an honor to take a class with Professor Fishbein. He had previously been retired but came back to teach! This class was great. Fishbein explains the grammar very well and in very minute detail. He knows so much and his passion for Arabic is so evident when he lectures. He is also, as he put it, "كريم" when it comes to grading!
i personally didnt enjoy arabic bc of fishbein. hes soo boring--and i dreaded going to class. be forwarned though--if you dont go to class, fishbein will hate you. so go to class and do your homework! if you do the work, then you should be fine!
Fishbein is an interesting guy. He can seem a tad eccentric at first and you may feel that he thinks you're not working hard enough, but it's just his passion for this language. That, however, does pass and if you show effort, you'll have a pretty enjoyable time. Class can get boring and his quizzes aren't easy. His presentations are an easy and you should get an A on them. The three years that I was in his class were well-spent.
Very effective teacher for those who are not familiar with the Arabic language. Not a breeze for first-timers, but his teaching is very clear and his knowledge profound. Good sense of humor, and easy to talk to. I definitely recommend him.
Dr. Fishbein, as said in previous posts, is one of the most talented professors at UCLA. Extremely knowledgeable, and not just in Arabic/linguistics in general, but on a whole range of topics he readily discusses during lecture, adding depth and breadth to his already extremely informative and helpful classes.
While class may not be incredibly entertaining, they are very informative and Prof. Fishbein is able to convey the information in a clear manner.
In a word: boring. Fishbein is a decent teacher of Arabic, but he is soooooooooo boring! It was a challenge to stay awake in class. Arabic tests are all the same, straight from the book, so the class wasn't too hard if you could manage to pay attention and do the daily homework. Not much of a choice of professors here either, so if you're taking him, good luck
I agree with the poster above. his class was very easy but his lectures were unbelievable-many people were asleep. I would recommend him if you want an easy class where you don't have to show up all the time.
The class was fun, but soooooooooo long and I think that is why people were sleep. Fishbein is moody. One day he is happy and the other day he is not. Though, he is one of the best teachers. One thing I promise: Your grammer will improve...
I have to say that I am really surprised at all the reviews listed here in that they don't tell the whole truth about Dr. Fishbein's class.
Dr. Fishbein has to be one of the greatest teachers you could ever have at UCLA. He is always on-time to his classes, always at his office ready to help anyone who needs it, always willing to answer questions about the material, and is by far the most intelligent professor I have so far run into here at UCLA. Yes, his lectures and quizzes/tests can be challenging...but isn't that why you're at UCLA. Bottom line: if you want to learn Arabic, in its entirety, then take this class with Dr. Fishbein. You won't regret it.
