This professor is not nearly as bad as the reviews would lead one to believe.
Tests are open note and open book; his study guides give you a good idea of what to expect on the actual tests, and he curves generously. Plus his lecture notes are online, so class is- to some extent- optional. And while it may be true that he's not the most interesting or approachable guy in the world, he's not horrible, either.
And you'd have to be retarded or like miss the final exam or something to fail his class.
If you make a half hearted effort in this class, you will pass it.

ECON 41 Submitted June 12, 2006 Grade Received: N/A

This class is tricky to rate. I got an A-, so it's hard to be that negative. Midterm was super easy. Homeworks, while time consuming, were pretty straightforward. The final was hard. Like really hard (read the other comments).

As a professor Buchinsky is moderately entertaining and tends to keep class from being that boring. He doesn't cover half of what's on the syllabus and did an extremely poor job of preparing us for Econ 103.

Hands down the worst professor I have ever had.

ECON 41 Submitted March 24, 2006 Grade Received: N/A

Prof. Buchinsky only covered about half of what was on the syllabus (i.e. what is needed for Econ 103), and what he did manage to get to he covered poorly. The midterm was easy but the final was outrageous. Buchinsky is a good guy, but a terrible teacher. I think he should stick to researching or whatever it is professors here spend their time doing instead of preparing for their classes. Overall, don't take him if you don't have to.

WOW! His final was so damn hard compared to the rest of the quarter. Granted it might not be THAT hard but with the pace of his class and how the homework and midterm were, I would have never expected the final to be as hard as it was. STUDY LIKE CRAZY FOR THE FINAL IF YOU TAKE THIS CLASS. YOU WILL BE SHORT ON TIME. DAMNIT.

ECON 41 Submitted April 12, 2006 Grade Received: N/A

i never felt so lost taking a final in my life. He's not a very good lecturer, it was very hard for me to understand what he was trying to say.

Unless you have a good TA, it would be very hard to understand stats (especially if u've never taken stats before!)

If you're taking a class with him...hahaha...good luck.

I never thought I would be saying this. I didn't learn a single thing from his class. I'm very disappointed. A lot of people did poorly on the final. Most scored around the 30-40 range out of 100 points.

He is a funny professor but teaching wise, he is horrible. What he goes over in class and the homework does not show up in the final. The final was so hard that if I had 3 extra hours to take it, I would not have got all the questions. The final was harder than the rest of the quarter. He is is the worst statistic teacher I ever had. No one teaches you how to use a calculator or the computer system so you have to figure it out by yourself. I would say to steer clear of this professor.

First of all, what he teaches in class is nearly impossible to follow and understand. Giving us all these symbols and theories isn't enough. What about some numeric example? Even till now, I can't really identify all the symbols in this course.
Secondly, what he teaches is really different from what's tested (especially in final). I find no correlation between what he teaches and problems in HW. Yes.. you can probably go to TA sessions and find some answers. HW consists of a lot of computer work. I was glad that I knew how to use TI- calculators and didn't need to look up those stupid tables. Be warned though... they never really teach you how to use calculators to do HW. And you'd be stuck with looking up tables and wasting your time with the time-consuming program while it only takes you like 10 seconds to get the answers from calculators. But of course, some simulation can only be done by the software so you do need to know how to do it on computer if you're to take 103.

Final is open-book open- notes, which is great. I got a good grade but this class is simply a pain to me. The textbook makes you only more confusing. I would not recommend this professor...

I just took the final and it was horrible. He is harder than hard. If they gave you 10 months to study for this final, it wouldn't of been any easier. Buchinsky comes off as an easy guy at first, but spends most of the lecture time bullshitting about nothing or doing his stupid ass proofs which won't help you for the final. Don't ever take a class with him....there are no exceptions, not even if you have to. DON'T EVER TAKE A CLASS WITH HIM EVEN IF HE WAS TEACHING ECON 1. There is no reward for econ 41. Nothing is curved and the absolute scale is messed up. You were warned.
