All Ratings and Reviews for Neil Peter Jampolis
I was able to work with Neil for t2 quarters learning how to light a play or a dance piece. He is amazingly patient, does not overload you with work, will answer you questions til he is blue in the face, and is generally concerned about how you (as an individual) are doing. I was really upset about things that had happened in my personal life and he sent me an email just to check up on me and make sure I was alright. He is a compassionate man and a good teacher. I appreciated his years of experience and advice.
Neil is an amazing professor and person. For anyone who is truly interested in learning about lighting design, he will have you in awe as you sit in his class. One of his strong points is that he has so much real world experience in lighting, he can give examples to show rather than tell you what he's trying to explain. He cares deeply for his students and theater in general. Assignments were not very difficult or frequent, but they all were very helpful in learning everything from how to see light, at the beginning of the first class, to how to draft a light plot at the end of the second class. His ability to critique student work in a positive manner is also a special ability that I have not seen often in teachers. Previous experience in lighting design is helpful, but not necessary for his classes.
I have never had such a ridiculously unfair professor in terms of grading. For the final project, he never clearly explained what criteria he was looking for and told me not to worry about grading b/c there was "no right or wrong answer". Then he gave me a B, and when I asked him on what basis, he only said "my personal evaluation."
