Professor Keating is one of the best in UCLA. She cares for her students very much. She makes Linguistics so interesting to me. I learn a lot through all the assignment projects and I regain my confidence by her inspiration and help. She is wonderful and I really enjoy her class. Take 104 with her, then you will discover how great, how interesting the Speech Synthesis is!

Professor Keating is a phenomenal teacher. She has a concern for each student and tries to accomodate them with her office hours. She teaches and structures the class in such a way that if you do the work you can do well in the class. Melissa Epstein, her TA is also very helpful. Both of them really helped me to enjoy linguistics.

Very thorough in covering material. If you just follow her guidelines and keep up with the way she structured the class, there should be no problem. Great with additional help outside the class too! =]

This class is pretty easy, although the textbook is a waste of time and is incredibly dry. The important thing is to go to lecture and do the exercises. In short, good class.

I really enjoyed Professor Keating's Ling 20 class. As mentioned before, Keating was amazing with her office hours before the final- I couldn't believe it. You have to do the 8 homework assignments and I wouldn't miss class (although you may fall asleep once or twice), but Section is not necessary and the book is useless. There are 2 mini-quizzes, both of which were extremely easy. Do not fall behind in this class or you will ruin your chances of a good grade. Keating really knows what she is talking about though and will spend hours with you going over material. If you put in the effort, you will do well and really learn some interesting stuff.

she was extremely helpful! it was a fun class and it wasnt too difficult. not too much studying, more practice of sounds. class consists of 6 really easy in-class quizzes, 3 hw assignments, one transcription quiz, one production exam, and one term paper. the only thing you have to worry about is the paper. everything else is easy as long as you go to class.

excellent professor. she genuinely cares about her students and is very patient with them (i was completely lost in doing research for my paper, but she helped me work through it). she teaches well even if the material itself isn't very interesting.

lectures: she tends to give segues and explanations before definitions, which makes it hard to take notes sometimes.

for 103 the material is easy but the paper is a pain. stay on top of your IPA symbols and you'll do fine on quizzes.

prof keating makes an increidible effort for each one of her students, if youre willing to put in the time yourself. if youre into phonetics, she's probably one of the best professors, but dont expect the material to beat you over the head with excitement. overall, an increidibly good professor, but i dont recommend 103 to non-majors.

Really organized. The sounds can be very difficult to learn but she does an amazing job providing tons of (optional!) extra materials to go through.

She's also very accesible for questions and general guidance on projects and such. There's discussion boards which are answered fairly promptly, email, OH (which are scheduled around class vote too boot). She also encourages questions during class break and during lecture.

There are a many quizzes but they are pretty basic questions (symbol memorization) and not much to worry about. She grades fairly. The class is curved but she seems to honestly want everyone to do well.

All and all an awesome professor.
