The teacher is amazing and very fun, yet he is quite unfair. Yes...its an easy A-...but for all of you that want something better DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Almost every english composition 3 teacher is easy, Samuels is no different, except for the fact that there is no possibility to get a solid A. He doesn't understand that some of his corrections are wrong and that he is not perfect. If you want to take the class...its easy..but just don't argue with him and make sure to laugh at everything he says.

There's a really simple way to get a higher grade in his course: Get him to review your paper before turning it in. He may not always announce this service, but he will do it if you go to his office hours. He will nickel and dime you for making stupid mistakes if you don't. Everything is postmodernism, so as long as you are comfortable talking about everything with respect to postmodernism, he is a great teacher. He is also quite funny, just don't try to upstage him and you will be on his good side.

At first I did not believe the material in the class was an effective choice but the topics are actually quite interesting. Postmodernism and Contemparary Culture, and Technology are topics of choice (found in course reader).

He is a professor who is course reader heavy but the material is doable. The critisms of essays are also helpful. Style is not touched but many edits on grammar are. Homework is straight-forward and there are about three essays that are assigned for the year. He does not follow the syllabus exactly, however, and uses that more as a guide.

Enjoy his class, I have.

Professor Samuels is an exciting professor that tries to teach you the fundamentals of writing. One of the best things about his class is that he will sit down with each student individually and discuss their papers, telling you exactly what you can do to improve. You will write three essays and a midterm and the last essay will be a revision of your second one. The material in the class couldn't be better. You watch movies and television shows and analyze the context. There is some reading involved and you have to type up key points from the reading, but hey, its an english class. He is pretty funny in class and he encourages discussion, so you really get to interact. The papers were straight forward and as long as you payed attention in class, you could do well. I received an A - in the class and I really felt that I took something away from it. If you happen to take his class, ask him about bruin walk, he is obsessed with the reviews he gets on it haha. Anyways, I highly recommend this professor over any other english teacher at this school. I promise you won't regret it.

This class was really entertaining, but I would be lying if I said I learned much. We basically spent the first half of the hour copying completely irrelevant stuff down from the board and the other half listening to Professor Samuel talk about random funny stuff. We basically had to write 4 papers (super easy prompts) and the class voted-yes voted-to not have a midterm. Hmm....participation is worth a quarter of your grade so just make sure your hand constantly shoots up to give answers. Aside from that, there was nothing more to this class. I did not try hard AT ALL for any of the papers and kept getting A's. I honestly think my writing got a bit worse after this class because there was absolutely no challenge...oh well. Yea I ended up with an A- and I'm ok with that, I guess.

Take Samuels for Eng. Comp 3. Most chill English class I have ever taken. If you don't like reading books, or writing literary essays, this class is probably your best bet. I got an A- in the class, but I'm not positive that EVERYONE gets one. It' s not difficult, class is entertaining and Samuels is a pretty funny guy. Super chill, pretty easy, you can write your final paper on your favorite movie.

Enjoyable class, yes. BUT not everyone gets an A-. I didn't. Just wanted to dissipate that myth.

Good lectures that are interesting and easy to follow. Assignments are very reasonable and the paper topics aren't overly complex. Very fair grader.

Samuels is an awesome teacher! He grades nicely becuase he believes it will heplp you learn if your grade is high. Absolutly! He is funny, smart, and just became a family man. He is one of the best teacher's at UCLA, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING HIS CLASS. If you listen at all and do what he askes on the two or three essays that he has you write the entire year, your sure to do VERY well. I am a horrible writer, but I did what he asked and got an A-. Plus, he's funny as hell and that makes class enjoyable.

FANTASTIC! Grade: A-
I improved my writing a lot by FOLLOWING Prof. Samuels' instructions and learned about postmodernism, modernism, and automodernism. The essay prompts were related to new media productions like MySpace and Facebook, which were not hard to write about. He is HILARIOUS and always made the class laugh every session. Raise your hand and participate and just FOLLOW his instructions and you'll be set. One easy way to help your grade is to PROOF READ your final drafts and make sure there are no common mistakes, like misspelled words and verb agreement.
