I learned a lot from the class. Prof. Brown is really knowledgable about the subject and you can tell is very enthusiastic about Indian/SE Asian art. He's a pretty easy professor too cause he gives out study guide questions for the midterm and final that are on the tests word for word and he also has the Lecture Notes at the bookstore just in case you miss a lecture.

I had him for Art History 56A. He was an excellent professor and I would love to take more of his courses. He is organized, and there are no surprises in his exams. Everything is very very straight forward, and he goes over it many many times before the exam.

This guy is great! I actually just enrolled into this class for a ge, but it ended up being one of the best classes I've taken here at UCLA. He's funny, the material is really interesting, and I've remembered more from his class than any other. I definitely recommend it!

Professor Brown was such a good professor! His lectures are entertaining and really organized. He's someone who cares a lot about his students and really makes sure that they're prepared for what they're going to be tested on. The only thing I didn't like about the class was that the TA's were all so different in their grading. Some were easier (and nicer) than others. Either way, this is a good class to take!

Professor Brown was an excellent lecturer. He knows what he is talking about, and he makes it interesting. He has sort of an odd sense of humor, but thats one of the cool things about him. He is a genuinely nice guy too. I had Art History 56A with him, and as long as you come to class and listen, its really easy to get an A.

ART HIS 114F, taken Fall 2016 Submitted Dec. 17, 2016 Grade Received: A+

I really enjoyed this class. Professor Brown is amazing, and he is really intelligent. We have 2 field trips outside class, but they are both interesting and he is a great curator. There are no tests, but six essays which requires reading and research, but if you attend all the lectures, you will be fine. He also scans and uploads all readings, so the class did not require purchased textbooks. Thank you Professor Brown, and I will definitely take his class again. I ended up with an A+

Brown is a smart and entertaining teacher, but TAs do all the grading for the class so it would be unfair to judge him in terms of the class difficulty. It is crucial to get a good grade on the final, which accounts for 40% of the class, and miderm which accounts for 20%. Brown is very helpful as he prepares lecture notes for his students, and gives out study questions for midterm and final. Though study questions are extremely broad, the things he repeatedly emphasizes in his lecture and notes will be the subjects of the exams. There is also a paper assignment worth 20%, and 20% participation grade, both are easy to get an A on.

Brown is an excellent lecturer on South/Southeast Asian art. He definitely knows his material and explains it very clearly and in detail. He's also pretty funny. I highly recommend this class to those who need an art history GE.

Note: Brown isn't a hard professor (the exams are fine as long as you DO YOUR STUDYING), but some of the TA's can grade harder than necessary.

Great professor, but horrible TAs. I felt sections had really nothing to do with the class material itself until it was exam time. I agree, that the class takes too much of your time for a GE because it is a lot reading. They also expect alot on the exams. Alot of people complained about the grades. But overall good prof. just needs to get better TAs. Take it from me. I got an B+

I recommend this class and professor, especially if you're looking for a straightforward, no-trickery GE. Brown's lectures are NOT boring and are very easy to understand. To study for the midterm and final, just memorize like crazy: use his lecture notes sold at Ackerman, the list of slides he provides, and write out answers to all the practice essay questions. In addition to Brown's high-quality teaching, I found myself interested in Indian Art even though I previously had no interest in art history at all - a very enjoyable class
