COM LIT 19, taken Spring 2021 Submitted June 23, 2021 Grade Received: P

I loved this class. We got to read a huge selection of poems from a wide variety of poets. Professor Shideler made the material super comfortable for all of us despite the sometimes graphic content. Very laid back. We had to write 3 essays, but don't be concerned; they're all low stakes and casual. 10/10 would take again!

Shideler is a teacher who deeply cares about the well being and learning of his students. He takes his job very seriously. But he's very laid back when you speak to him. He never judges you even if you have something less than spectacular to say. But as long as he knows that you're trying, he'll have great respect for you. He goes out of his way, by a long way to help you in any way that he can help you, whether it's personal troubles, deciding what to do with the rest of your life, or if you're stuck on a paper and don't have any ideas. You can almost tell him anything, and he'll never be condescending or disdainful to you. He's here to really help students, not to put them in their place. Plus, he's so funny and happy. You can tell that this is a man who genuinely loves life, and that feeling is contagious whenever you're around him. And he's always so happy to see you, as if you've made his day or something. But more importantly, he's very intelligent in a variety of avenues of learning. You'll definitely learn a lot from this person.

Take his classes! He's a very approachable kind of guy, very kind (see that smile in the photo?), and is definitely concerned with student learning. His reading lists are long, but he always makes you look forward to class. His lectures are "casual," so you don't feel intimidated by him, and you always feel comfortable with contributing to the discussion. Highly, highly recommended!

Cool guy, interesting class, surprisingly tough (but not unfair) grading on essays. I've gone to all the lectures except for one, and that I regret.

This professor is one of the great ones. He's always available when you need him, whether to talk about class or to simply talk. Never makes you feel like an outsider. His courses are challenging and interesting enough to get you through the reading list. Taking one of his classes is a privilege.

His class is interesting but there were some really dumb students in the class. Sometimes the students would say the most ridiculous things and threw in a few big words to make it sound good and he seemed to love it. He is a hard grader. I studied a lot and tried really hard to write to a style that he would like and still only got a B+. THe class gave a good background for poetry so im still glad that i took it.

Ok. This is one word not often used to describe professors, but it is precisely the one word that fits Prof. Shideler the best: cool. He is just cool. He is laid back, kind, sharp-witted, on top of his stuff. Whether he is talking about the wonderful gender transgressions in Virginia Wolf's ORLANDO or your checklist for the major requirements. If you are a Comparative Literature major and somehow have not taken a class or done a research project with him, hurry up, you have lots of catching up to do. If you are thinking of becoming a Comp Lit major, hurry up, this is the guy to talk to about it. If you do not knwo how to combine your interest in Korean and Latin, for example, Shideler is the guy who will tell you you are not crazy, and you will believe him, because he is cool like that.

I took Scand 50W during Winter quarter 2001 for my writing II req. I thought his lectures were pretty interesting and he didn't really bore me. The books we read were easy to understand. The grading was not easy but I guess it was fair, after all this is a writing II class. The reading requirements were much easier than american lit. and were enjoyable. The TA I had, Jeff sudquist, was also a really cool TA and section was pretty fun. Sometimes section gets cancelled or you can leave much earlier.

Ross Shideler is a wonderful, inspiring professor who honestly enjoys working with students. Just give his classes your best, and you won't regret it.
