I loved having Hardinger. Wish I would've had him for 14C too. He's a great professor, knows how to teach VERY well, and is so organized and provides you with so many opportunities to be insanely successful. He's the only teacher that I was able to get a grade above a C+ in chemistry with. He's awesome!

I took Scerri, Lavelle, Ow, and Hardinger.

My overall rankings which mainly counts effectiveness and grading is:
1. Ow- His grading scheme was very nice. 85% was an A-. I got an A. He doesn't have a permanent position because he is relatively new. UCLA calls him up a few times a year, usually during winter and summer. He's very good at explaining the material. He's also funny. His tests were fair and he's really good during office hours. Take him if he's teaching!
2. Hardinger- Also good at explaining the material. He uses too many metaphors in my opinion. Way too excessive. He probably wastes like 10 minutes per lecture telling metaphors for chemical processes. If your a slow learner, I guess that's good. His tests were fair. They are very similar with past tests. His grading scheme is the same as Ow's. The knockdown on him is that he's not as good during office hours as Ow. I feel like he's not the type of professor where you can build a connection with. He's not as easy to talk to as Ow was. I also hear that he writes awful rec letters.
3. Scerri - What a jerk. But I admit that he was pretty funny at times lol. Overall, I feel that for pre med students, Scerri is better than Lavelle. Not only because he is easier, but also because having a conceptual understanding is much more important for 14C and 14D than doing calculations like in Lavelle's class. In terms of effectiveness, Scerri is nowhere near the two I have ranked above. I feel that Scerri is a bit disorganize and he even forgets some of the material sometimes like chair conformations.
4. Lavelle- This guy was hard. Unfortunately, I never went to office hours.

I've heard great things about Garg. Based on what people say, Garg is probably the best, but I haven't taken him.

Took 14C and 14D with Hardinger. BEST. PROFESSOR. EVER. Seriously, I love this man. You hear the stories about ochem being the most confusing subject in college. Well, Hardinger does an excellent job laying it out for you in lecture, with plenty of diverse practice problems to address any issues you may have. 8 previous administrations of midterms and finals available online, so no excuses for a poor midterm/final performance. These were the most enjoyable classes I've taken so far at UCLA, straightforward, fun, interesting, and stress free. People say good things about Garg, but I'm sure it's just lazy pre med talk. You'll not only get the grade but also learn ochem downpat if you put in the work.

Took both 14C and 14D with him and I have to say that Hardinger is one of the best professors Ive had so far at UCLA.

His class is extremely fair and straightforward; he always lets you know his expectations on his midterms and final, and the quality of education in his class is second to none.

Hardinger is a great professor. However, this class is HARD. I thought it was easier than 14C (which I took with Lam), but still hard as fuck. He's got a fixed grading scale, so you need at least an 85% to get an A-. Your grade is half final, and 25% for each midterm. You can get like a percent of extra credit by posting on the discussion boards. There are tons of resources that Hardinger makes available to you through his website, including like 8 quarters' worth of old exams. Those will save your life. Do them all. I got a 78% on the first midterm and an 89% on the second midterm and ended up with a B+ in the class (I don't know how I did on my final). This class is hard, but it's doable. Get ready for some of the most painful jokes you will ever have to listen to.

Hardinger knows his chemistry. Very well. And he knows how to teach it, so take it. You should take 14C and 14D with him because you will know his teaching and testing styles. 14D is easier than 14C. I thought it was fun, but my friends think I’m crazy so maybe I’m not the best person to ask about this. I found Hardinger to be a douche so I never talked to him and I hated his stupid cat jokes because I’m a dog person. Lecture seriously would have been only 30 minutes every day if he didn’t insist on telling metaphors and stories for everything, but they help some people and SOMETIMES they were actually funny. They just get old after two quarters because you get to know his comedic style and then it’s annoying. The key to getting an A is working really hard. I went to lecture, then watched all the lectures for a topic from bruincast before doing the OWL and Practice Problems for that topic. I wrote out every single problem. It took a lot of time but you get to really understand organic chemistry this way and that’s the only way to do well. You cant memorize a whole lot, besides the names reactions but then you still need to know the actual processes and that happens with a lot of practice. I got like a 96 and a 94 on the midterms and ended up with an A in the class. I don’t remember what I got on the final, but the final was HARD. It was a few days after lecture 1’s, and everyone knows the lecture that has the later test has a harder one. He must think that we have more time to study, idk. Do well on the midterms though because they’re easier than the final, which is cumulative. Good Luck! Take Hardinger if you can, and remember that you have to work to get an A but he is a good teacher and he gives you the right tools

Hardinger is one of the few professors at UCLA that doesn't do traditional research - instead his interests lie in perfecting an engaging and intuitive method of teaching organic chemistry, and it shows. Chem 14C and 14D were hands down the best classes I have ever taken, not just at UCLA but in my life. I went in thinking Organic chemistry would be difficult and boring, but I've come out loving the subject. Everyone told me orgo was just memorizing shit, but the way he teaches it he explains the patterns behind the concepts so that I ended up memorizing very very litte. He is a very interesting and organized lecturer, and he gives all of his past exams so you know exactly what to expect. This course is not easy by a long shot, but if you are willing to put in the time to go to lecture, do the practice problems, and do the practice exams there is no reason you should not succeed. I got an A- for both 14C and 14D. Also, his jokes, while slightly ridiculous, definitely give good entertainment value to the morning lectures. I came out of 14A and 14B scarred by Lavelle, but my faith in chemistry has been restored by this man. I can't say enough nice things about him. Take him!

He is a good professor.
I had 14C and C with him.

I can tell that he cares about his students a lot. His metaphors might sound silly at first but they can be helpful if you pay attention. His tests are hard, but reasonable. There are so many HELPFUL, USEFUL resources on his class web page!

Even though I wasn't an A student, I know that he provides you everything that's going to help you; :lecture slides, OCATSA, OWLS, practice problems, lecture notes, discussion boards, and the previous tests. So I believe it's up to you how you're going to do in his class.

GOOD LUCK

Professor Hardinger is one of the most under-rated professors in South Campus.

Yes, his tests aren't easy. Yes, it does require a lot of work. But Dr. Hardinger provides so many resources for you to learn and do well that there is no excuse for not succeeding.

He provides old exams for the past like 5 years, which I find most helpful. The answer keys to these tests are also provided with explanations.

His thinkbook is full of questions and detailed explanations.

His lectures didn't put me to sleep. I enjoyed his corny jokes.

Don't let organic chemistry scare you if you're taking it with Dr. Hardinger.

To get an A: Do all the old exams and make sure you understand all your mistakes. Do at least half of all the thinkbook questions for each topic and make sure you understand all the concepts and your mistakes. Review his lecture notes/slides as necessary. Bottom line: Do as many problems as you can. Make sure you're not memorizing steps but actually understanding the concepts.
