Very strange professor, as he showed absolutely no concern for students and simply re-directed students to the TAs when asked a question. This was the very first time at UCLA where I felt as though the professor did not care or at least try to show concern. As far as the class is concerned, it was very boring and consisted of a hard, very involved essay, 2 tricky MC exams, and one takehome midterm essay which was about the only simple part of this class. The hardest part was staying awake.

This class is very manageable although there are some serious issues with Kelly and his teaching.

First off, if you're a Comm. major and this class is a requirement, don't fear, it's very possible to do well, but you have to be prepared for one of the most incredibly boring lecturers you've ever endured. Despite the fact that the class was early in the morning, Kelly's monotone voice and reading of the lecture verbatim from a prewritten sheet makes lectures almost unbearable. But this is usually an issue with many professors.

Kelly's problem are the multiple choice parts of his exams. They are needlessly overwritten, intended to confuse and test students (this is no hyperbole, I did well in this class and still have issues with the exam) Also, the paper is such a substantial part of the grade that if you don't do well on that, your grade for the class can be screwed. My advice would be to attend every lecture and write down what he says verbatim. He reiterates the key points from the reading which means you don't have to do them. And second, when you do your paper, go and talk to your T.A. and make sure it is suited to their desires, because ultimately, given the distribution of the grade, the T.A. essentially dictates your grade.

Wow, I thought I was alone in thinking that this is the most boring class ever! I have a 4.0 and I'm usually on top of my work, but I had a hard time staying awake in this class. At first I thought the topics we were to study were interesting but with all due respect, prof. Kelly manages to make them pretty dull. Prof. was obnoxious and unfriendly when I went to see him in office hrs. Very boring class.

Nice personality. However, I went to every class and couldn't focus on his lectures. He is simply too abstract to follow. He definitly knows his stuff, but doesn't convey it very well. All you have to do is completely memorize the notes and you'll get an A on the tests. The textbook was helpful for the paper, and I don't think I really even looked at the reader. My TA was great and definitly made the material easier to understand.

Don't bother showing up to class, his tests come straight from his lecture notes (available online). He is the worst professor teaching the worst class at UCLA. So, not an enjoyable experience. Just study hard for the midterm and final and you will get an A.

Comm 100 with Prof. Kelly was a relatively easy, though extremely boring class. I am the type who always goes to class -- but this is one lecture that you really do not have to go to. Unlike the previous reviewer I found that reading the book really helped me. Basically, if you read the book chapters and class notes carefully, and have a slight idea what the reader articles are about you will do well. Section is a complete waste of time and the TAs were generally worthless.

Prof Kelly has a "Mr. Burns" laugh and a Mr. Rogers wardrobe. He answers emails quickly.

Since this class started at 9am, I found it extremely difficult just to drag myself to lecture. Kelly's teaching style is very straight-forward and predictable, which can be a good thing as well. But for those who lack long attention spans, it will be extremely difficult to stay awake. The lecture notes are very good--study them and you will know 80% of the material. The midterm questions are basically essay/short answer questions smashed into multiple choice, so each problem is very long and tricky. The TA's find random reasons to cancel section and are generally disorganized; they usually can only tell you what you already know. They also don't seem to read your essays--my TA seemed to grade essays based on length. Overall, just study the lecture notes until you have them almost memorized, then quickly scan the textbook. The course reader is expensive but pretty useless--maybe share with a classmate or something.

DO NOT take this class unless you have to and do not take a class with Kelly either. He is completely boring, does not care about his students, the exams are difficult, there is a lot of reading...there really isnt anything good to say about him. Do not take his classes!

It was a huge mistake taking two courses taught by this Professor in the same quarter. As long as you study, his tests aren't very difficult, but his lectures are incredibly boring. The reading material was good but he wasn't good at lecturing about that material. He also seems very disinterested and condescending when discussing with students about the material. He just kind of nods off what a student would say as though it wasn't correct. He is also bad with keeping in touch with his students out of the classroom. There were never any updates on the course webpage aside from the lecture notes. I wouldn't reccomend taking this professor for any class.

I was prepared for the worst when I took this class, other comm majors had told me that this class was boring and difficult...iamgine my surprise when I realized that this is a great class. The material is dry at first but after a while I noticed that my way of thinking changed and it became very interesting. This class provides a foundation useful in all other comm classes. Professor Kelly is stuctured and helpful, he is knowledgeable and he plans his lecture so that they are easy to follow. I highly recommend professor Kelly.
