All Ratings and Reviews for William Macduff
Mac is a GREAT professor but he will WORK YOU. Be prepared to work hard and be challenged, as he expects a lot from his students. He is also very concerned with his students' learning, to the point that he gives out his home phone number and actually responds to emails. Mac has an engaging teaching style, as well as a great sense of humor and passion for the theatre.
Mac is one of the hardest but most rewarding teachers at UCLA. Thought he makes his students read 4,000 pages of plays a quarter, he breaks the material down in detail. Because Mac is no-nonsense when it comes to his lectures, he makes his tests very challenging. His midterm is about 100 questions, while his final requires 3 blue books for 3, 50 minute essays. Those who pay attention will get a comprehensive and valuable understanding of theater history.
Mac's classes require lots of reading that we rarely go over in during lecture. He expects you to understand the material and answer questions alone. Whether or not you benefit from this method, it is extrememly frustrating. He has a habit of grading only the first couple of pages of your essays, so be sure to state what you intend promptly. His grading technique is also a mystery, as little feedback is given. This class presents you with interesting material, yet relies on you, the student, to be self-sufficient and learn on your own.
