All Ratings and Reviews for Ya-hong Xie
xie is terrible... his lectures consist of only theory and derivations... you will never see any problem-solving in class, and thus you will never see anything in class that will help you on the homework and tests... but, you have to take the class, and xie makes 15% of your grade 'class participation,' so good luck
Hard, I think its the class more that him but he seemed unstructured and couldn't figure out how to dumb the class down enough for undergrad's.
good prof, clear lecture note.
He's really nice but he has to learn to teach a bit better. He's open to student suggestions as to what will help them learn better.
Professor Xie is a very good teacher. Yes, he did follow the textbook very closely with his lectures, but he did explain that he himself hand only fully learned the topic a few years earlier. Plus he mentioned that he really like the clear structuring of the book which follows a very natural progression when learning thermodynamics. He is very concerned about his students and is always willing to listen to their feedback on the class, the lecture, and the department itself. Professor Xie is very open to suggestions on how the class or his teaching can be improved. He was also very approachable during his office hours, though sometimes he could be hard to track down. His tests were very fair, very similar to the homework. He is always willing to spend as much time as is necessary to make sure a student understands the homework, as long as they are willing to make the effor to ask. He also liked to share advice on career goals and plans which I thought was funny, but will probably be useful in planning the future. Professor Xie is one of the few engineering professors who I like as a person; I would highly recommend his classes to anyone.
good professor. good lectures. course is difficult, deceptively so. be careful not to get the least bit behind. this course is good, listen to every word, Xie doesn't tend to repeat himself.
Xie is a good professor. I had him for MSE 130 and his lectures were clear and understandable. His lectures usually came directly from the book. That was probably the only negative thing about either him or the class was that you learned the same thing from the book as the lecture. Technically you could get by without going to class. The only time you'll get info that can't be found in the book is when you ask him questions in class. Xie's always friendly and open to questions and suggestions. Xie is one of the better engineering professors at UCLA.
