So I will say that the bad reviews should not be that bad. She is honestly a really kind professor especially in terms of grading. There are plenty of opportunities to gain points back with extra credit and she even lets students do rewrites of their wrong answers on the midterm. Her midterm and final were pretty fair. She only puts types of questions that we have seen multiple times prior to the test. She is not too hard to understand, just make sure to sit in the front of her lecture. Her resources are good, just a tee bit crowded and it can be hard to get direct help. Campuswire responses tend to be quite slow and by the time they respond it is far too late. The majority of the TAs are excellent and bring a good aura. She herself is willing to spend hours helping students and is genuinely very passionate about the course. It can be tough because the homework is significantly harder than anything else which can be demoralizing but just push through.

The homework assignments were useless. Lectures were useless. The professor was useless.

Our TA was very nice however, and did teach the content. Overall, it was an easy class, so if the content and lecture isn't useful, you'll still do fine. Don't expect to learn anything though.

The first few weeks is a learning curve, especially if you're used to strictly formulaic math classes like AP Calc AB or BC. Shevtsov genuinely wants students to do well. 30A midterm was a breeze, easier than Bennoun's. It was mostly just basic differential calculus and slope functions. 30B final was honestly hard. The average was a C-, but my grade was saved by the curve from the TA strike. Some people say this is fake math, but in hindsight, this class was pretty fun. As someone who never had any coding experience prior to this course, I thought it was stupid. But after a few weeks and by the end of the course, I enjoyed it. Stick to making sure you understand the practice midterm/finals and go to the problem solving sessions, you'll be fine and learn to love the course.

I felt that this class was overwhelming at times due to the nature of the material and the uniqueness of the subject. Lectures were okay but the slides used in class had very little detail on them. The class does have a pretty large workload but if you do all of the homework you will probably need to study less for the midterm and final.
I didn't take calculus in high school and LS 30 doesn't require it as a pre-rec however, you will need to know some calculus half-way through the course. I didn't feel like any of the calc concepts were explained in lecture (it was just assumed that we knew them) and so I was initially a bit worried. I spent a few hours on Khan Academy one day and figured out everything I needed so if you didn't take calc in high school don't worry. Just make sure that you put in some extra time learning the first couple weeks of AP Calc AB through khan academy or another tutoring website (it will make so much more sense).

When taking this class I had so much trouble. Especially coming into college as a freshman and all of this is new to me. This professor is difficult to understand and you really have to pay attention in order to get what she is teaching. The homework's are very long and when giving us the midterm there were two questions that she knew she did not teach us and out of 64 points those two questions were worth 30 points combined. Although, she is very sweet and funny at times.

I took this class as a requirement for my major, and it was okay. Professor Shevtsov assigns a lot of homework compared to other professors, but it was fine since I'm used to doing around 15-20 questions for homework. The textbook used in this class is not very clear, so further research is needed to understand how to do questions. I recommend using Professor Garfinkel's online videos about chapters of the textbook. The midterm was really easy because I used the practice midterms to study and know what I am going to be tested on, but when I repeated that studying method for my final, it didn't work, and so I got a much better score on the midterm than final. I have no idea why the practice finals weren't similar to the final, and I think in the future they need to produce practice exams that mimic the questions asked on the actual final. Professor Shevtsov can be hard to understand at times, but it's not impossible, just make sure you're paying attention. To do well in this class I recommend to use practice tests but also practice questions from lectures and from the textbook to make sure you understand the process of getting the answer. I think the class is fine, so if you have to take it, do it, and just stay on top of everything and you should get a B or above, almost guaranteed.

Jane is not really good at explaining content, and sometimes her classes are super slow, but her exams are easy. So it's kind of like a trade off if you choose her, a teacher that doesn't teach that well and easy exams.

Lab: If you don't know how to code, this class is going to be so hard for you just as it was for me. I came into this class thinking it was just going to be another calculus class and I was excited because I love calculus, but it wasn't. There was a coding lab, which was frustrating to say the least and often times did not make much sense. At the end of each quarter, there is a lab practical, but we did not have that this quarter because of the TA strike.
Lectures: She had slides and would explain things minimally, but I figured out soon enough that if it weren't for the TA's writing notes down as she talked, I would not understand. That was literally the only way that I would semi understand the content. Also iClicker is mandatory and it is also not free.
Homework: The homework was so exaggerated. I had other friends in the same class with a different professor and they had about 8-12 questions of homework a week and on the opposite side of the spectrum, she assigned close to 25 questions at a time, which I felt was not that helpful.
Exams: The exams were reasonable and they were doable because of the problem solving sessions and office hours.

Jane was a very sweet professor and obviously passionate about the subject, but it was often extremely difficult to understand her. This course is pretty difficult, so it makes it worse when you cannot understand the professor. I always left lectures feeling like I learned absolutely nothing. I found out that her exams were supposedly easier compared to other professors. She was extremely accommodating during the TA strike. The course itself is one of the worst courses I have ever taken, but that is not really her fault. My final grade was a B, which for someone who was completely lost throughout the quarter, I would take as a win.

Honestly, don't take this class. Take the Math 31 series. The material is seemingly useless and there's an unnecessary amount of coding and homework. Jane is super nice, but she's hard to understand and the lectures are just the textbook (which is not a good textbook at all). Thankfully, we got excused grades because of the TA strike. The midterm was fair, but the final was super hard.
