My daughter rented this apartment from 2020-2021, and all I can say is RUN don't walk from this place. It's dirty, poorly maintained, has roaches, inoperable washers/dryers, unlocked mailboxes (resulting in stolen mail and packages, etc.) Nothing works and nothing is ever repaired. My daughter didn't have a closet door when she moved in, and it was never replaced - we just had to hang up a shower curtain so it didn't look so depressing.

Had I seen this review site I would never have allowed her to rent here. We are now dealing with the management fraudulently holding some of her security deposit for cleaning, painting, drain clearing, and a mysterious dented door (this never happened). California law requires that security deposits be returned within 21 calendar days and that if any deductions are made they need to be backed up with itemized receipts, etc. Additionally, landlords are not allowed to charge for normal wear and tear maintenance such as unclogging drains or painting. I have emailed and mailed the management and no one has responded. My next step will be to contact the California Attorney General's Office and the Los Angeles County Department of Consumer & Business Affairs to report them. I have no idea who "Eli" is, but Eli, if you are reading this, please respond to my email and letter.

Both of my kids have rented here at 516 Glenrock. The apartments are very large (the two bedroom has two baths!) for the reasonable rent, and the spaces are so bright and sunlight filled. Some of these older buildings are dark and depressing; not this one. One feature I appreciated is the secure parking included in the rent (street parking near campus is of course pretty hard to come by, and it's nice to have your car protected from partying kids). This building is a super short walk to campus, restaurants, Whole Foods, etc. You can't beat the location.
Yes, the building is older and definitely "student housing"...but that's what I remember from my own undergrad days. We always found the manager Ruthie to be more than helpful and willing to solve any problem or set up timely repairs. She's a mom herself and actually is looking out for the kids and is super approachable. I would recommend living here to get the most out of close-to-campus living.

Hi all! Eli himself here.

I see here that 516 has received some bad reviews lately and I would like to address some of the issues mentioned in the ones dated after I started working here in management.

The short review that alleges the others to be "cap", is, I believe from one specific disgruntled tenant. We discounted some apartments during the pandemic, and now that the market has spiked back up, so has the price. We made sure to notify the tenants before the lease end date that the prices were due to change, in line with the changes in the market, but nonetheless offered them a discount to continue renting. They didn't let us know if they wanted to stay or not, and we had other people who were interested in the apartment, so we leased it out. They were not happy about that, and I understand their frustration, but we were not unreasonable or "terrible".

The pandemic was hard on us, and we are sincerely doing our best to recover and satisfy the tenants in the building to the degree we can. This is an old building, the review that is displeased with the old condition of the property, I don't know what to say other than, I am constantly liaising with various maintenance people to maintain the building and remedy some of the issues, but yes, the building is old, and it won't get younger unfortunately. We are painting and upgrading, we installed a new intercom system, elevator mechanism and we have planned to paint the inside and outside of the elevators.

Regarding the pool: the guest of a tenant vandalized the pool area (caught on security system), and we had to lock it down temporarily. It is now open, and gets cleaned every week .

Regarding the laundry machines: yes, they all work. Sometimes tenants will overload them with clothing, and they don't work. This is not particular to the machines in our buildings, if you overload a laundry machine, it will stop working.

Regarding new management: yes, there is new management, I can provide proof of this.

I am very eager to fix the reputation of this building. I personally live here, and I enjoy it, but I understand that things go wrong sometimes. So I urge anyone with a negative review to first call me/ text me, and see if I can help fix the problem. I am available to tenants, well outside of business hours, and within business hours. Let's work together, you want to live in a nice, functional building, and I want happy tenants!

Sincerely,
Eli from Management.

First of all, the things we were promised to be fixed by the time we moved were not held. The floor was so dirty, the walls were not white and had stains, the restrooms look so old! The pool and jacuzzi have been dirty and now they have a sign saying it’s getting fixed. However, I have not seen anything done in the “spa area” as they like to call it. It’s been about 2 months since the paper in the elevator was put up. To me it seems like they are using that excuse for the people touring the place. The laundry room will 9/10 times have at least one broken washer. They just recently painted the lobby and laundry. The interior of the elevator is so bad. Sure they got a new system but it’s bad on the inside. Patio is dirty and ugly. No one uses it. Rent is decent if your willing to live in a rat hole.

Just writing to put this here, the 516 Glenrock is not under new management. It's lowkey a traphouse but maybe that's part of its charm. If you want cheap accommodations and don't mind the noise from the frats etc then it's not too bad, but this is by no means a luxury apartment. Good luck with hunting.

My boyfriend rented an apartment at this building. We were concerned bc of the negative reviews, after meeting the NEW MANAGAMENT that took over around November time and seeing all the upgrades they have done to the building we felt very comfortable and secure renting here.

The ne management has not only done upgrades ot the building , but are on top of any service issues, plus has hired new new staff all around, the reviews seem bias and BS tbh. the building is looked after and for the money you pay, views, sunshine and tons of space!

A friend lived here for a period of time in 2018 and dissuaded me from renting here when I started looking in late 2020 / early 2021. I sent her a screenshot of the listing, because it looked spacious and light filled, and she told me that whilst the apartment is indeed spacious, with good ocean views and natural light, the building itself was being poorly managed into disrepair.

That, coupled with the reviews we read here, made us less than enthusiastic about inspecting 516 Glenrock, but we were doing several inspections in one day and decided it couldn't hurt to make an appointment since everything else in our budget was cramped and dingy, and the prices here were lower because of Covid.

Eli, the new on site manager showed us around. He really impressed us. He was warm, funny and importantly, open and honest; he was more than willing to talk about the bad reviews. Apparently the building was being managed by the manager that a few below reviews have mentioned, and he came in late 2020, and since then has taken care of the things that were being mismanaged / overlooked. He addressed all our concerns and really took his time.

Since living here (since January 2021) we can confirm that Eli was being honest. We have had no issue with bugs, every time we need something, we text Eli and he is on it almost immediately. I saw a pool guy the other day, so I'm assuming that is being taken care of, though I haven't used the pool yet (weather has not been permitting).

I think they are trying to repair the image of the building, so the care the management takes here is over and above standard. We love living here! The views are stunning, I like waking up and going out on the balcony to breathe in the ocean air. The sunsets over the sea are exquisite.

One con, is that there is one apartment that like to have parties on weekend nights. The noise from them can be annoying.

So I was going to write a long thing, then I saw someone else literally had my exact experience and I couldn’t believe it. So i’ll just share what they wrote:
“Horrible apartment overall, don't live here if you have any choice.
- When we first moved in which was like two weeks after our lease start date because Ruthie (apartment manager) kept having an excuse on why she couldn't give us the keys (she's busy, off on that day, etc), the apartment was super dirty. The cabinets were filled with dirt, roach carcasses, and roach droppings. The floors had footprints all over it and the occasional dead and live roaches. We didn't have a closet door (it looked like it had been ripped off) and Ruthie told us we would have to pay for it if we wanted one? Ruthie assured us the walls would be painted before we moved in but it looked like a kindergartner painted the walls. There were random splotches (not even the same color) on the wall probably covering scuff marks. The bathroom was half light orange and half off white. Blinds were missing from the windows and we didn't even have a fire alarm. I had to ask her for a fire alarm before we got it.
- There are roaches everywhere and Ruthie will keep saying she's contacting the professionals but actually never does anything. The only "prevention" she ever did was put a powder behind the outlets and it wasn't even done by professionals. It was done by her and the lady that occasionally cleans the courtyard. Of course, this "prevention" did nothing for the roach problem but she'll keep telling you to wait for it to take effect. Yeah, I waited for a year and the problem still isn't solved.
- There are four washers and four dryers however at least half of them are always broken. Some sad people who had their money eaten will post a sign saying the machine is broken but Ruthie never does it. I lost at least $10 because of the broken machines. At the beginning of the year, there were also some suspicious signs saying we can't use the machines because police are currently investigating??? What happened in there? A murder?
- The noise is horrible. My apartment was facing the backyards of the apartments in landfair and there's one building which rents out to people who have parties. The parties are super loud and go on until like 4 AM. They happen frequently because it's specifically for people who want to host a party. I had finals at 8AM the next day while the party was still happening at 3 in the morning. It's not a complaint at this apartment building specifically but just know that the surrounding buildings are too noisy.
-What I'm super angry about is the security deposit. We got $710 deducted for cleaning, painting, and plumbing? First of all, we didn't damage the apartment at all and we left it in a better condition than when we moved in. She didn't even give us actual invoices for the deductions but something she typed up in Word. I asked for proof we damaged the walls and actual invoices from the companies that did the work but all she does is ignore my emails. Just for all other angry renters out there, I talked with a UCLA lawyer and she said UCLA has sued Diopharm before for unfairly deducting from security deposits but they're still doing it. There's a one year statute of limitations on filing a court claim and when you sue, you can sue for 3x the amount they failed to give back. For current renters, take lots of pictures. Take pictures of the poor conditions, the roaches, and everything you want to sue for. Keep contacting Ruthie and save all your communication. It's sad that they keep taking advantage of students just because many of us move back home after the lease ends and don't have the capability to come back to LA to sue.”

Had a great experience here! Moe was wonderful, and my apartment was great. I kept it pretty clean, so I never had any roach problems. 10/10 recommend!
