Elementary Standard Arabic
Description: Lecture, six hours. Course 1A is enforced requisite to 1B, which is enforced requisite to 1C. Not open to students with prior knowledge of Arabic. Introduction to formal Arabic (modern standard Arabic), including listening, speaking, reading, and writing. P/NP or letter grading.

Fall 2017 - This class is a lot of work. You really need to put in a lot of time to do well in this class. You are not only learning one difficult language, but two dialects of it (Masri and Formal). Be careful because if you are taking other classes that require studying and have other time commitments (which you probably do), then really be careful about signing up for this class because it is A LOT of homework and busy work!

Fall 2021 - **I didn't have prof. Kinda Al Rifae, I had Brady Ryan (who was a grad student under her advisement I believe)** I loved this class; it was by far my favorite of the quarter. My professor was so well prepared every time. I learned so much Arabic and got an amazing sense of achievement from this class. It did require a very high workload, but the workload was definitely worth it in my opinion since there was no busywork (everything we did was valuable). I will definitely be taking at least one more year, possibly even majoring in Arabic just from this class. Definitely recommend for anyone interested in learning a super fun and engaging language with very small class size.

Professor Cooperson is amazing. The best Arabic professor on campus hands down. The fact that I could find him anywhere, walking on campus, eating lunch, even at various demonstrations and protests, and I could *still* ask him for help on my Arabic is a testamant to how much he cares for students' learning. He's funny, which makes it easier to swallow his grading, which at times can be a little on the tough side, but hey, that's the price of learning a great language. Even though with Arabic, you don't get much choice of professors here, consider yourself lucky if you get Prof. Cooperson.

Fall 2021 - Literally the best Arabic professor I could have asked for. Molly was always very helpful whenever we had questions, and graded fairly on all exams!! if you have the chance to take Arabic with Molly, I really recommend it!!! The workload is a bit on the heavy end, but if you like language learning and don't mind putting in the extra effort, you should be fine. It also gets more manageable as you get further into the course.

Fall 2016 - Albert was a very lenient and understanding professor. We would do our homework online, and if a drill accidentally was reported as "missing", we could email him and tell him that we really did do that assignment. He was funny and kind, and taught you what you needed to know. Don't get me wrong: Arabic isn't the easiest language, the class is very fast-paced, and the work-load is a bit heavy. However, the work is pretty easy. It's just doing your online/written homework (homework is 30% of your grade, so its a big boost.. especially since its graded on participation!) and the content is pretty easy. You just have to memorize vocab & grammar, really. The final consists of 15% of your grade, and wasn't really challenging. The quizzes were like 5. I'd consider this class a GPA booster, and I think the language is both beautiful and valuable... I'd say take this class, don't be scared!!! Really easy to get an A. Feels like a high-school setting, there was only 20 people per class, and the teacher really gets to know you.
