Spring 2018 - Easiest professor I had at UCLA. I took four of his classes, two of which were seminars, and each time I had a higher grade. He remembers his students and encourages open discussions in his seminars, not so much for his other classes though (but they’re just as easy; one had a midterm and final only, and the other had take home assignments). Seminars are super enlightening and workload is extremely manageable, especially if you have other classes with heavy workloads. He’s quick to respond to emails as well so even if you can’t make it to office hours he’s ready to help.
Spring 2021 - This seminar was so much fun and so engaging. We just did weekly discussion posts on slack about the readings that we did, and these posts followed into discussion during seminar. The discussion is framed around the readings so you do have to complete all of them and attend every seminar to receive the best grade. Professor Nair is super engaging and will assist you with any extensions you need or questions you have. If you are going to do the readings and participate in the discussion this is an easy A. Our only assignment to turn in was the final paper, which is long but is not a research paper, just an exploration of how the texts we covered in class can relate to a building of your choice. Amazing class
Fall 2017 - Professor Pohl is a great teacher. This class did not involve T.A.s which I was happy for. Pohl gave great lectures and you can tell he is passionate about Mixteca history and culture, and knows his stuff! I went to his office hours and he was open-minded and did not treat me like some other professors do at UCLA. He was unpretentious, fun to talk to, and still curious to hearing opinions that differ from his own. In fact, he embraces this. The class involved one presentation and one 10-15 page final paper. His class structure is not so rigid, he is not uptight about lateness, but this class was so small and I enjoyed it so much, I was only late one or twice. Overall, I suggest taking him, he was the BEST art history teacher I have taken out of the 3 others I had classes with. I was sad to only have had one class with him, he is not on campus much so if he is teaching a class take it while you can!
