Spring 2024 - logistically, the class was fairly easy. weekly readings with assignments due every other week which isn't a lot. but, if you fall behind, it does catch up to you. so, make sure ur on top of due dates. readings are a bit dense but u have one week to complete like 2-3 of them so it's not the worst. i had friends that got all 100s across the board but I struggled with her grading style a bit. however, I don't think she's impossible to please, just go to her office hours and after a while you should be able to get a hang of it. she's also really accessible and accomodating. scheduling office hours is not difficult and she genuinely loves her students. she's also pretty flexible with due dates as long as you communicate with her.

Fall 2023 - Readings were a bit dense but tbh as long as you read a few of them each week you were fine and they were pretty interesting overall. she didn't require students to really prove that they read it as long as you had enough knowledge and understanding to participate in the class. again, just pick like 4 readings out of the 8 and you'll be good to go. the seminar felt more like an informal lecture... we were just sitting in to hear her talk about a subject she enjoys but we could ask questions or contribute throughout. so, it wasn't like she hogged all the speaking time. the final project was a big research paper which was daunting at first but she graded pretty nicely. as long as you put in the effort to make a coherent essay and provided necessary evidence/did good research you could pull out a good grade. you do a small presentation introducing your paper's topic by week 9 and she'll provide feedback before you write. go to her office hours if you need help. she's a sweet person who cares for her students and will give good feedback. i struggled with mine and she legit spent 40 minutes on zoom helping me find like 10 readings relevant to my topic.

Spring 2021 - This seminar was so much fun and so engaging. We just did weekly discussion posts on slack about the readings that we did, and these posts followed into discussion during seminar. The discussion is framed around the readings so you do have to complete all of them and attend every seminar to receive the best grade. Professor Nair is super engaging and will assist you with any extensions you need or questions you have. If you are going to do the readings and participate in the discussion this is an easy A. Our only assignment to turn in was the final paper, which is long but is not a research paper, just an exploration of how the texts we covered in class can relate to a building of your choice. Amazing class

Fall 2017 - Professor Pohl is a great teacher. This class did not involve T.A.s which I was happy for. Pohl gave great lectures and you can tell he is passionate about Mixteca history and culture, and knows his stuff! I went to his office hours and he was open-minded and did not treat me like some other professors do at UCLA. He was unpretentious, fun to talk to, and still curious to hearing opinions that differ from his own. In fact, he embraces this. The class involved one presentation and one 10-15 page final paper. His class structure is not so rigid, he is not uptight about lateness, but this class was so small and I enjoyed it so much, I was only late one or twice. Overall, I suggest taking him, he was the BEST art history teacher I have taken out of the 3 others I had classes with. I was sad to only have had one class with him, he is not on campus much so if he is teaching a class take it while you can!
