Description: Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Using Asian American movement of late 1960s and 1970s as lens, introduction to social history methods, including role of oral history, documentary films, and archival history, and analysis of primary and secondary sources. Asian American movement situated within larger frame of social change of era and interpretation of nation and society through lives of ordinary men and women. Exploration of campus- and community-based activism, service learning, and civic engagement. P/NP or letter grading.

Fall 2018 - Despite my lack of effort in the class, ASIAN AM 40W truly is an "easy A" of a GE. I am not disappointed with myself because my grade reflected my attitude and approach towards the class. Professor Bascara is an incredible professor with an engaging teaching style that includes interesting content. The class was graded by weekly one-page responses, three essays, and a final (if I remember correctly). I am selling the NCRR textbook for $10! Email me at ************* for inquiries! Go Bruins!

Spring 2021 - Dr. Fong is the BEST professor I've had at UCLA! She is the most accommodating professor and an amazing lecturer. Even though this class was online, Dr. Fong made this class super engaging and offered a space for students to connect with each other. She also posted her lecture slides and lecture recordings. Her lectures were well-organized and the readings go hand in hand with the lectures. For the homework, we had readings before each lecture and weekly discussion posts. Each week, there was a discussion prompt and we had to respond to the prompt and reply to 2 of our classmates' posts. Some of the prompts involved a ton of creativity such as creating a short comic or writing a poem. And, we had a journal assignment (300-400 words) every 3 weeks and discussed current events or our life during the pandemic. For discussion sections, we formed groups, and each week, a group presented a summary of the main points of the readings and lead a discussion either in breakout rooms or in the main room. My TA Emily was super kind and very helpful! Also, we were put into small groups to work on the community newspaper, where we focus on events that happened within the Asian American Movement. For the midterm, we had to write 2 essays: 1 short response and 1 long response. We were given 2 days to complete the midterm. Before the midterm, the TAs helped created a study guide, which was super useful for writing. Make sure to be really specific when referring back to the readings. I definitely suggest discussing with other people in the class what to write about! For the final, we were given 2 options: receive the same score as our midterm or do the final, which can only improve your grade. I chose to receive the same midterm score, but there was also an extra credit opportunity for those who chose to do the final. Overall, I absolutely loved this class and Dr. Fong is so amazing and super accommodating!! If you need a GE, take it with Dr. Fong!!!! :)

Winter 2020 - Professor Tran was not engaging whatsoever. Her slides were just paragraphs copied and pasted from the internet and she literally just reads directly off it. The class was not organized and neither were discussion sections. Don't even get me started with discussion sections. The lack of care/ attentiveness from my TA , June, was honestly so sad. My whole section emailed June about grades and no one, and I mean not even 1 person, received a response back. Grades were NEVER entered in. Literally no one had any idea of how they were doing in the class. I am extremely unsatisfied with what I received in this class given how much work I put into a GE. Like... a GE. Professor changed the grading scheme and the syllabus like 4 times. Basically, we had 2 midterm quizzes (which were apparently meant to be extremely easy-- all those questions were trick questions, don't let the TA's fool you) and our final paper was scrapped and instead we had a Discussion section group project that we had to present during the last week of classes. Thanks to COVID-19, half the sections did not get a chance to present and had to present through Zoom. TLDR; Don't take this class. And if you have no choice and are stuck with this as a GE, take it for P/NP and pray you don't get June as a TA. I must say though, class was pretty interesting and I learned some new things, but this class made me start smoking again.
