Statics and Dynamics
Description: Lecture, four hours; discussion, two hours; outside study, six hours. Requisites: Mathematics 31A, 31B, Physics 1A. Newtonian mechanics, vector representation, and resultant forces and moments. Free-body diagrams and equilibrium, internal loads and equilibrium in trusses, frames, and beams. Planar and nonplanar systems, distributed forces, determinate and indeterminate force systems, shear and moment diagrams, and axial force diagram. Kinematics and kinetics of particles. Linear and angular momentum and impulse. Multiparticle systems. Kinematics and kinetics of rigid bodies in two- and three-dimensional motions. Letter grading.

Melek is a really nice guy, but he's not that great a lecturer. His voice is not super loud and sometimes he would go through things so slowly it drove me crazy. His tests are harder than the homework so just beware. Overall, pretty good professor. And he graduated from UCLA not too long ago I think.

Homeworks are a large percentage of your grade. They are extremely challenging, even with help from the Professor, TA, and a study group. Expect to spend 10-15 working hours or more on each assignment. They range from 10-15 of the most difficult book problems. Prakash gave sample midterms and finals. His actual exams were significantly more challenging. He is very responsive to student input. Lectures are essentially from the book. Course grades seem to be generously curved.

IMO, he was not a good professor who cared about the students. He was very snappy and had the TA lecture the course on multiple occasions. He apparently had to travel to Asia about three weeks before the class was over. He simply had his TA lecture the course, whom had no idea what she was doing. I would avoid him if at all possible for 101. He has good credentials, but I would not suggest him for 101.
