Elementary Structural Mechanics
Description: Lecture, four hours; discussion, two hours; outside study, six hours. Requisite: course 108. Analysis of stress and strain, phenomenological material behavior, extension, bending, and transverse shear stresses in beams with general cross-sections, shear center, deflection of beams, torsion of beams, warping, column instability and failure. Letter grading.

Things have changed a bit since the last reviewer posted about this class. There is one HW assignment per week and a quiz every other Friday. The quizzes are pretty nice since they are each restricted to the material that was covered in the two weeks leading up to it. There is no midterm, so having the quizzes can take away from the 6th week stress that you'll be getting from your other classes. I'm not sure if he's going to keep this policy, but for our class, he promised to drop the lowest quiz score (out of 4). They grade the quizzes pretty leniently, and they are each 50 minutes long. The final was actually pretty easy, so just make sure you know your basics. The course reader SUCKS. There is no required textbook for this class, and if the reader is your only source of information, you're screwed. Don't make the same mistake I did and let someone borrow your CEE 108 textbook, because it would probably have come in very handy for this class. You do a lot of the same material but in a bit more detail and slightly more complicated (though not by much). He has decent powerpoints, but it helps a lot to go to class and watch him go through it rather than just downloading and reading them on your own later. It will just look like a lot of crap on your screen if you don't see the animations/process of getting each step. You do not need a notebook for this class. I bought one and used about 2 pages of it. Just take your course reader to class and live by the examples in it. If you need explanations, you're shit outta luck unless you go to office hours or something. Even if you feel lost though, you'll get decent scores on the things you turn in, so don't freak out too much.
