Introduction to Chicana/Chicano Studies: History and Culture
Description: (Formerly numbered Chicana and Chicano Studies 10A.) Lecture, three hours; discussion, one hour. Interdisciplinary survey of diverse historical experiences, cultural factors, and ethnic/racial paradigms, including indigenousness, gender, sexuality, language, and borders, that help shape Chicana/Chicano identities. Emphasis on critical reading and writing skills. Letter grading.

Fall 2024 - Sorry this review is just gonna be a rant about how much I love Gaye Theresa Johnson. This woman is so goated. She's such a caring, educated, and cool professor. She turned this class into a safe space post-election and offered so many resources for undocumented students. She truly is a legend. The class itself was also an amazing class. Relevant subject matter and pretty fair tests. My one complaint is that the midterm was 15 short answer questions that took most of the class HOURS to complete (I literally spent 5 hours on it). But it was a take home test at least, and Professor Johnson seemed to realize it was too long so it was probably a one time thing. The rest of your grade comes from two other papers as well as discussion participation, all of which I thought were graded fairly. Overall, I would take again 1000/10

Summer 2024 - I liked the way this class was very chill. The instructor was very chill in his teachings and very passionate. He was also respectful and made sure everyone felt welcomed in class and to ask questions. He is very encouraging and overall, his vibe is very chill and kind.
