Day of Dead Ritual
Description: Lecture, four hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Introduction to philosophical roots and evolution of traditional celebration of Day of Dead ritual. Contemplation of indigenous, Spanish, Mexican, Chicano, and other influences and manifestations of this ritual. Special attention to Nahuatl language and worldview related to this ancient ritual, such as ancient calendar systems. Designed to motivate critical thinking about what is observed in altars today and impact globalization has on tradition. P/NP or letter grading.
