U.S. Latino Politics

Description: Lecture, four hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Examination of history and contemporary role of Latinos as minority group in U.S. political system. Historical analysis of Latino immigration and migration, struggles during civil rights movement, increases in citizenship, registration, and voting in 1980s and 1990s, and new wave of anti-immigrant attitudes, and response by Latinos today. Political relationships between Latinos and non-Latinos as they relate to political institutions, political parties, voting coalitions, representation, and public policy, including focus on Latinos role in 2010 midterm election. Participation as researchers in Political Science Survey Laboratory, helping to collect data in public opinion survey on attitudes toward Latinos, immigration, and other topics.
