Classical Tradition: Epic, Tragedy, or Comedy

Description: Seminar, three hours. Preparation: reading knowledge of Greek, Latin, or Italian. Analysis of Greek and Roman works and their re-creations in Renaissance and modern periods. Emphasis on how poets build on work of their predecessors. Reading may range from "Iliad" or "Odyssey" to tragedies by Sophocles and Euripides or satires by Aristophanes. S/U or letter grading.
