j1: (for some reason i have only east Asian course options) Her ability to teach and her integration with TA's teachings make J1 easier than it really is. Just pay attention and come to lecture and you'll do fine. She'll do all that she can to help you like talk to you after class about this or that and making time available for extra practice. The TA discussion sections are real helpful depending on who you get. Also, the textbook is real good/ helpful.

JAPAN 70 (they didnt have this option as a course he taught on bruinwalk) I personally feel that this is an amazing class taught by an amazing professor. Professor Lippit is incredibly knowledgeable and intellectual about modern and contemporary Japanese literature. During lectures, he would provide background on the text or the film and then tie in the background with the overall message and theme of each work. However, Professor Lippit is soft-spoken so it could be hard to hear what he is saying if you are sitting at the back of the class. But, if you are sitting at the front, you can gain great insight on each of the works from his lectures. He chooses his words carefully and it seems like he almost comes up with new ideas while he is lecturing. Also, he is very open to new ideas whenever there is discussion and is not condescending about other people's opinions. There are no essays, just an easy, one page, double spaced response every week. These responses are to weekly discussion questions he puts up and you should do them well since they will be reused on the midterm and final. His tests are not difficult if you read the material. Overall, he is a great professor and I will definitely be taking a class with him again.
