Photonics and Communication Design
Description: Lecture, one hour; laboratory, three hours; outside study, eight hours. Enforced requisite: course 101A. Recommended: course 170A or Bioengineering C170. Introduction to measurement of basic photonic devices, including LEDs, lasers, detectors, and amplifiers; fiber-optic fundamentals and measurement of fiber systems. Modulation techniques, including AM, FM, phase and suppressed carrier methods. Possible projects include lasers, optical communication, and biomedical imaging and sensing. Choice of project preliminary design. In Progress grading (credit to be given only on completion of course 173DB).

Winter 2020 - Interesting capstone. All self directed so your grade is really dependent on how he likes your idea. No exams or homework but the project itself is pretty time consuming if you do it the way he expects it to be done. Everyone in it is usually pretty interested in photonics.
