Introduction to Inquiry and Research in Education
Description: Lecture, two hours; discussion, two hours. Introduction to empirical and analytical educational research. Intended for undergraduates interested in learning how to find, interpret, and evaluate educational research. Overview of different methods of conceptualizing inquiry and gathering evidence, including qualitative approaches (e.g., ethnographic, semi-structured interviews, case study), quantitative approaches (e.g., survey, measurement, experimental, descriptive), mixed methods, and design-based research. Highlights multiple methods of inquiry and research, ethics of conducting research in social sciences, and norms of conducting and reporting research in field of education. Overview of selected strands of equity-oriented research in education. Letter grading.

Fall 2022 - I took EDUC 35 with Professor Martinez-Fernandez in the Fall of 2023 in person. EDUC35 was a pretty difficult lower-division class. The course heavily relied on textbook readings and different articles/case studies. Professor Martinez-Fernandez was organized but not clear with assignments, he also loves to randomly call on students during lectures so be prepared! EDUC35 was a challenging course, consisting of multiple quizzes, weekly group assignments, and one group project. The course is research heavy and some concepts were difficult for me to understand but as long as you are on top of your assignments and study hard you will be fine.

Fall 2023 - Professor Martinez is very knowledgable and passionate about educational research. He is a kind professor and helps his students. However, this class relies heavily on weekly group classwork. If you don't have group mates who pull their weight, it can be very difficult to succeed. If you communicate this to him or your TA they are very helpful.

Fall 2020 - The class was online, so my interactions with the professor were minimal. The way the class worked was he would post multiple 8-10 min lecture videos for each week, and at the end of each video he would say "now go answer question __ on the lesson log!" which directly pertained to the short lecture video. It made the lecture and the homework very interactive, but also meant you had to watch and do the assignment every week. The material was interesting and applicable, and the professor was really nice and helpful in office hours. Everything is graded by TA and discussion was mandatory attendance and participation. There were group assignments that had to be completed as well but they were pretty easy. Your TA matters more for this class but the Professor Matinez-Fernandez was really cool and nice and I would for sure take another class with him in the future. If you take this class, go to his office hours at least once, he is super fun to even just chat with.

Winter 2023 - This class was super well organized and thought out. The homeworks are really nit-picky so you have to make sure that every homework is done thoroughly. The quizzes are in class but are easy if you go to lecture and take notes. Basically this class sets you up for success if you just participate. excellent way to get the GE out of the way.
