Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey: Analysis of Role of Science Fiction Within Society

Description: Seminar, one hour. Students learn how to approach science fiction analytically in order to understand big themes present within genre, as well as how works choose to approach those themes. Exposure to variety of science fiction works in multitude of mediums including literature, television, film, anime, podcasts, and video games. Study of what it means for work to be science fiction. When building fictional world, what are different ways that science fiction can be used? Examination of how science fiction genre comments on broader social issues present within society. Exploration of some of key themes present within most science fiction works. P/NP grading. Facilitated by Hatim Malek, with Tara Prescott-Johnson as faculty mentor.
