Theories of History and Historicism

Description: Lecture, four hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Enforced requisites: courses 10A, 10B, 10C. Recommended: courses 120, 121. Exploration of theories of history and historicism that offer productive approaches to literary texts. Investigation of how theorists negotiate between abstract concepts of history and situated historical narratives, how histories are constructed, troped, and given authority, how histories constitute past and present in relationship to each other to stabilize tradition or induce change, and complex ways that literary texts operate within and on their historical contexts. May be repeated for credit with topic or instructor change. P/NP or letter grading.
