Topics in Genre Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Critical Theory
Description: Lecture, four hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Enforced requisites: courses 10A, 10B, 10C. Recommended: courses 120, 121. Consult Schedule of Classes for author, period, genre, or subject to be studied in specific term. Depending on instructor, emphasis may be historical, regional, national, comparative, or thematic. May be repeated for credit with topic or instructor change. P/NP or letter grading.

Winter 2016 - I took Professor Seltzer's Crime, Mystery and Suspense course, and I loved every minute of it. He has a very dry sense of humor, which made lectures all the more enjoyable. There were only two 5 page papers and no midterm or final, so you can get away with not reading some of the books. I read them all, because they were all great. I've never been a mystery/crime reader, but he picked fantastic books that really changed my mind about the genre. I should say that he does notice if people aren't doing the reading, and lectures can be a bit painful if no one is participating. He keeps track of who is talking, but participation isn't a huge part of the grade. He understands some people just don't like speaking in class. But overall, it was a great and low-key experience. Take it if you want a class with less of a workload and really interesting readings.

Spring 2022 - Review for ENGL 91D (Intro to Graphic Fiction) One of the best classes I've ever taken at UCLA. Snelson was fun, engaging, and very kind. We had an entire discord space to ourselves where we turned in homework (very short reaction comic hw) and discussed fun things. Lecture and discussion attendance is mandatory and attendance is collected through doodles, but that shouldn't be a problem since it's a great place to relax and Snelson encourages you to just chill and do whatever you want to do in class as long as you're there. Sometimes, we watched movies to compare that to a comic that we read, other times it was just a lecture about the history of a particular comic and we even read short comics in class where we analyzed what was happening. In our discussions, we basically discussed the themes of the comics that we read for that week. NO TESTS, NO MIDTERM, NO FINAL...just an open-ended final project that you can do whatever you want on as long as it kind of relates to comics Overall, best class ever and would recommend!
