Medieval Romance and Literatures of Court

Description: Lecture, four hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Enforced requisites: courses 10A, 10B. Investigation of medieval court culture, exploring concepts of nobility, governance, love, loyalty, and power in range of genres: romance, courtly epic, lyric, debate, and satire. Texts may include "Beowulf," "Lais of Marie de France," "Sir Gawain and Green Knight," "Pearl," and Malory's "Morte Arthure." May be repeated for credit with topic or instructor change. P/NP or letter grading.
