Environmental Justice through Multiple Lenses
Description: (Same as Urban Planning M167.) Lecture, three hours. Examination of intersection between race, economic class, and environment in U.S., with focus on issues related to social justice. Because environmental inequality is highly complex phenomenon, multidisciplinary and multipopulation approach taken, using alternative ways of understanding, interpreting, and taking action. P/NP or letter grading.

Winter 2024 - M167 with Dr. Montgomery was one of my favorite classes taken at UCLA. I think she uniquely challenges students' ideas during class lectures and asks us to really think critically behind the social and political issues of environmental justice. She's also very nice and knowledgeable. The workload is also fairly light. Grading is: 10% - Participation 15% - Reading Reflections (aka weekly Discussion Posts) 10% - Midterm (MCQ, on the easier side and she gives a study guide) 15% - Final Exam (explain more below) 50% - Final Project The final project is either a group project that you present at the end of the qtr, an individual creative project, or an individual research paper (5 pages). The final exam can actually be skipped fairly easily if you choose to do a group project or submit a (fairly short) reflection after an individual project/essay. I really liked the weekly readings she gave for the reflections. You only have to pick one of them, and they're actually both interesting and on the shorter side, so they're the opposite of intimidating. Lectures aren't recorded but I'd recommend going to them anyway if you can. And she posts slides, though I think usually after the lecture. Overall, would take again. I think most people I know in that class would agree.
